Starting / Alarm System Issues - Fried???
« on: Feb 10, 2009, 06:24:36 PM »
Here's the scenario we're working with:

My friend's Xterra died. He tried jumping it with a Second Gen 4Runner (90-95). When he went to hook them up, he connected the wrong terminals on the 4Runner, so in essence he reversed the polarity of the system.

I was able to get his Xterra jumped from my Tacoma, but the 4Runner's putting up a fight. We can't open a door without the alarm going off. It will honk and flash lights for about a minute, and then it stops. We took the battery to AutoZone to verify it's condition, and it's good. We had it disconnected from the 4Runner for over 30 minutes, and still the alarm went off when we opened a door. On top of that, the starter doesn't even try to engage. The relay will click, but nothing after that.

I dunno what to do, now. Any thoughts? How do you get the alarm to reset? Why won't the starter engage? Did he fry something big????

No. You got his number?

use the valet button to reset the alarm

I've heard of this button. Where is it?

Aight. I looked for the starter fuse, but I didn't find one. Did pull the horn fuse to make the alarm silent.

the valet switch on my ford is tucked into the crossmember that my obd2 port is on

get the remote for the alarm, when you reconnect the battery, try to disarm the alarm with the remote

Welp, I think I've got it workin' again.

Went out there to try the "disconnect with key in on-position" trick. Thought it worked until I shut the door and opened again - alarm goes off.

So, I disconnect and reconnect with key in on position again. Then I try pushing in the red button. No luck. So then I try finding the valet switch, or whatever. I happen upon a small switch hidden under the dash. AND IT WORKS!!!

Thanks for all the help, guys. I reset the alarm, and it will start and run just fine.

Again, thanks so much for the help!!!!

Huh? Aren't those the same thing???

Yea, I think it's fine and dandy. I haven't heard of any problems since then.
