22R Engine Mods
« on: May 02, 2007, 09:43:19 AM »
I have a 22R with about 160k on it, I added some Headman Headers and Magnaflow exhaust. My question is; without rebuilding the motor and adding internal performance parts what else can I add to give me a little HP boost? Weber carb? Thanks

I haven't re-geared my diffs yet. Yes I have 33's, I'm waiting to add locker/r&p at the same time, so working on the engine first and foremost. I'm running 4:88's in my Dodge 3/4 with 39.5's, what ratio would you suggest for 33-35" on my 8" axle?? 4:88 also? And is there a prefered place to get the 3236 weber's? Thank yee

also if you ever plan to run anything bigger than 35's that I would strongly encurage you to go with 529's :twocents:

www.LCEngineering.com   or  www.redlineweber.com

i run a 32/36   and  like it alot

a 22R  like to rev,  if  you figure  tire size  and altitude  mine gets the best gas mileage  if i cruise at 3200 rpm   its in its peak  torque  curve  and  just seems happy there  so  when i regear   hopefully soon  i will have 5.29's   and 33's  but i tow alot with my truck  so  the extra  gearing is needed

as a rule 33's = 4.88   and 35's = 5.29

if  your ignitor  and coil are in good shape  your not gonna gain much  by the msd,   you CAN   swap in a 20R  distributor  and  gain a  longer spark   i have  a 20R  dist  in my truck  and  after swapping it in  my 22R  really  came alive

but i do have the 3236, stage II LCengineering .460 lift race cam,  ported head,  old LC headers, 2 1/4  exhaust  with no cat  and  open glasspack  oh  and bored to .060  oversize

we just got an 85 xtra cab with like an 77-79 celica 20R in it with a weber 32/36, fresh head and RV cam, dual row timing chain and a 22R dist. oh and some oldie headers.... but the fool we bought it from had the dist. about two teeth off, so we fixed that, ran a lot smoother but it still isnt running right, took the valve cover off, set the crank to top dead center,  :snare: and the timing chain is at least TEN TEETH OFF!!!!!!!! the only way it would run is having it fire #1 cylinder at about 15-20 degrees BTDC........  :smack:  so on thursday i have to pull it apart and reset the damn thing........ i'm gonna find out who the kid had do the head and call them up to give them a piece of my mind!!!!!!!!!  :tantrum:

get rid of the 22R distributor  and get a 20R distributor,   you'll thank me later

oh  and  ...........  RV CAM  :thud:    its  not a RV  why do  people get sucked into that  :headshake:

a 20 or 22R  is  going to make  mucho torque,  its just the design of the block  to get  any real power  from them  you gotta  let them breathe,    any cam  under .430  lift  is  gonna suck donkey butt

might as well use the stock cam  :headshake:

alright, 20 r distributor it is!! and yeah, i didnt understand why the kid said it was an RV cam, i figured he just meant it was a little hopped up..... i'll have to measure it and see what the lift is, i think its a crane cam though, i dunno, this kid was a floppin moron, i dont even know how he drove it around town as long as he did, the valves are adjusted to spec. and the motor has got great compression though!!! so i'll have to work on it tomorrow and get the damn timing chain on RIGHT!!!!!! should be a little screamer!!!
