Alot of people look into a mild cam, headers and a 2.25" free flowing exhaust.  If you really want to get serious, some port the intake to flow better.  LCengineering also sells a larger throttle body.  I've also heard of guys using slightly larger injectors to help with fuel delivery.   Enginbilder also sells a head with larger valves, so you can really get some air flow into the cylinder.

A member on here to talk to, is Buuders.  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?action=profile;u=3840  He sent me a PM of everything he could remember on getting his 22RE to go fast, in a 2wd setup tho.  It was quite detailed.

If you don't have to smog, I'd look into a RE setup with a turbo and propane.  A buddy of mine has this setup, and he's seeing an easy 150+hp numbers with decent boost.  A couple locals used to mud bog, and had a 22R setup with a Holley carb, header, and a big cam.  It dyno'd at 200hp at the crank, but that was alot of money tossed into it.

I sourced a 60mm TB off of a 1g 4g63 (custom flange welded onto intake), ported the :pokinit: out of the intake and head, ENGN BLDR head with 1mm oversized SS valves, dual valve springs with chromo retainers, lce pro torquer cam,  lce adjustable cam gear, lce pro rocker shafts, lce pro oil pump, hyperutectic 9:1 pistons with .014'' milled off the block, egr delete, header/2 1/4'' exhaust, lce 35 lb flywheel and lce A/F tuner to juice up the fuel supply. Hoping to see a very good torque curve with this thing, I'll get it dynoed on a Mustang in 4wd on 39.5's and see what she puts down. I have just under $4k into the engine.... Next build will definately be a 3rz or a 2jz.
