bobby longs?
« on: Apr 09, 2007, 12:01:56 AM »
Im going to order longs here in the next month or so  :crossed: i was wondering are stock toy front axles 27 or 30 spline? If i went with a 30 spline what would i have to change? Is it really that big of difference between the 27 and the 30 spline?  :dunno:

bobby longs 30 spline refers to the splines in the Birfield Joints. stock toyota solid axles already have 30 splines in the diff and at the hub.

thats sweet man, wish i had some exta $ for some longs :rivers:

Nothing has to be changed. Like fullthrottle said, the change from 27 to 30 spline is where the shaft goes to the bell on the birfield. It is a bit stronger but the real strength increase is the different metal that is used and the heat treat process that Bobby uses. I believe that he uses 4340 and 300m for the Longfields. Along with the strength upgrade you have the peace of mind that you are backed up 100% by Bobby Long. So far I know of only two failures on the 30 Spline Longfields and both have been replaced!

I would get the hub gears while I was at it, cause they become one of the next weakest links.

to add to what 98taco4x said, if you don't get the hub gears from bobby long and have issues with the birfs, he won't warranty the longfields unless you have the hub gears that he sells...70 bucks a piece but worth the investment

If you don't have hub gears and have troubles with the outer splines he won't warranty them.

couple things that helped me when i did my longs was the fact that i was rebuilding the full axle at the time. i checked the clearance of the bell for the larger birfield...i didn't need to clearance luckily. i didn't tighten down the trinion bearings and set the preload until after i clearanced the birfield...i swear it was a learning experience. my first knuckle rebuild was a lot of putting it together, forgetting something tripple checking and fixing it. i'm pretty sure it would only take a couple of hours to do now that i know what i'm doing, but it takes a lot of patience. I packed all the new trunion bearings before i started the tear down, made things a bit easier and smoother during the actual install just having everything on a roll around to slap together. The hub gears can be a b!#ch but not too bad. i had more trouble getting the spring set back in the hub dial. eitherway...good luck with the build and enjoy the longfields

thanks for the info, i've torn a few hubs apart and re assembled them, not too bad but it can be a biotch..... i'm probably gettting the full third from marlin so i dont have to fluck around with preload and all that right now... just pop it in put it all back together according to some diagrams and rock and roll!!!

that is NOT true.  i dont know where the thread is on pirate, but if you PM him over on pirate i am 99% sure that he will warranty them even if you do dont have the hub gears.

that being said it is a good idea to get the hub gears because if yours let go they are more than likely going to ruin your birf.

Call Terra at Toyota Superaxles and she'll explain the warranty deal. if it has to do with the bearings or inner axle it's warrantee'd without the hubgears, but if it has to do with the endbell portion of the birfield that slides into the spindle assosciating with the hub gear, then it's not unless you have his hub gears, but if the gear is the cause of the birf exploding then it's not warrantee'd without the gears...it's complex to clarify, but she'll explain it

I posted what Loki said about the warranty ten posts above. The warranty issue is only for outer spline damage.

I just put a set of 30 splines in my new axle housing and I had to clearance the hell out of the knuckle ball. Lots of grinding in the bottoms of the knuckle ball.

ha, my stock hubs/studs held up better the the longfields!!  but they were the early design of the 30 splines.  no problems with the splines.  getting the new longfields here next week so i will ee if they are bigger (needing to clearance the bell).
