There are two parts to a transfer case... half of it gives you the reduction the other half gives you 2wd/4wd. When you run duals the front case is only a reduction unit and the rear case is a normal reduction/2wd-4wd. In the dual ultimate the front reduction unit has 2.28 gears and the rear case has 4.70 gears. You can run the front case in low range 2.28.1, the front case in high range and the rear in low range 4.70.1 or both cases in low range for awesome to one!!

I think the reason people get confused about this set up is the use of the term "Dual Transfer Case". I really think the term should be abandoned and instead use "dual reduction", "compound reduction", or just plain crawl box and transfercase. This would cut down on confusion, and be more correct terminology for what is being done, and sounds better than "Dual Transfer-Case" IMO.

EDIT: BTW great explanation UKMyers.

correct you cannot control the front and rear axles. you just have a huge range of gears. 20 forward and 4 reverse gears. as far as controlling axles seperatly, you can put a twin stick in the second case and modify the shift rails and then you can be in double low range and have rear wheel drive, but you cannot achieve front digs with a toyota transfercase yet... as far as i know marlin himself is the only one that can do front digs with his toyota...

nah im not looking to spend that kind of money..... i came from the jeep world where its atlas II and D300 twin stick....... thats why i was confused.......

i was reading another guys post about doing gears before Twin TC's....... with a dual setup do u get more range of gears? is that the reason why people say do twin first?

forgot to ask

if i wanted to do a dual TC on my 87 4runner would i want a TOP SHIFT or a FORWARD SHIFT TC to adapt to it and why also what do i have lol>?

First look under you vehicle, is the shifter attached to the transmission or the transfer case. If it is attached to the transmission then it is a forward shift, transfer case top shift. The crawl box would have to match your transmission either forward shift or top shift the rear tcase would have to be top shift. It being an 87 I would think you have a foward shift.

Does that mean just the front tires "dig"? Why would you want that?  :dunno:

why wouldn't you want to be able to burn the front tires and not the rear  :funny:....  it makes turning easier on tight trails sometimes you need just the front to spin and not the rear.. you can turn on a dime with front dig. who doesn't want to do front digs in a yota?? :haha: that would be the :pokinit:

what about a full floter? doen't it have hubs so you can lock it in? so if it is unlocked the rear is free? but i really see no point in wanting it front wheel drive thats just me though?

dammit, now you got me wanting to take out my flanges in the rear and put locking hubs there just to be able to turn.
iff you think about it i could drive in fwd and when 4wd is needed, just make my pass. get out and lock in.
now that is an idea.

to the original poster, if you were a jeep guy, and you know atlas,d300 ect.... then just think KLUNE-V. same thing

i wasn't back talkin, that actually gave me an idea. i've been tryin to figure out how to turn my junk for a while now, you just "enlightened me" to the fact that i "could" do front digs on my truck-tell passenger to unlock rear hubs, works for me.
