Question
« on: Feb 13, 2007, 10:30:52 AM »
I posted this over on the 95+ board a couple of days ago..  just wondering if anyone here knows anything about the newer 4unners..

( I have a 87 runner and am thinking about upgrading to a 2000 to 2004.
Is there much of a difference in them as to buying a given model?
If you had a choice which year would you choose and for what reasons? )

Sorry if I was a little vague.  The 87 is my hunting truck, and I was looking to up-grade to  newer 4runner.
the X2 isn't going to work "if it's what I think it is"

The 3400 v6..  Is that the 3.4L?  and what year 4runner is that available?

Sorry if I don't understand all the technical jargon..   I am 63 and if the truck breaks I find someone to fix it..  i don't do that stuff anymore..  I am looking for the best 4runner to up-grade to...    Thanks

The 3400 is the 3.4 V6.  they started in 4 runners in 95.  i think that the earlier 4runners with the 3.4 look beter and they would be a little cheeper, but they all are good trucks.

Thanks ..  I noticed that the newer models have a 4.0 L v6..  Is that engine as reliable?

The reason I bought the 1987 is because of the 22RE..   It seems to be bullet proof.

the 4.0 have been out for a few years now and i have only herd good about them.  and you could use it to tow your 87 after you make it a crawler truck

Go with an '03+ and get the V8 :burnout:

I have an '04 and love it. The V8 tows really well, and mine came with a Class III hitch from the factory. No one seems to have any reliability issues with the V8 as of yet.

Plus with a newer one, you can get cool things like the XREAS shocks (great for stockers, PITA for anyone who wants to do any lift) and it will handle like a sports car (even more so with the full time 4wd V8s), and ATRAC which people seem to like more and more.

Edit: Lots of good 4Runner info over here --> http://toyota-4runner.org/

Thanks for the help TacoStewie...   I don't need two trucks so i will be selling the 87..  I have had it for ten years and no problems..  Main complaint is the 2 doors..  dog kennels in back and all the gear in the back seat.. a pain to work out of..
Thanks again

Thanks YotaJosh.   What are XREAS shocks?   I don't want any lift...want to stay as close to the ground as possible with the most ground clearance.. scary when you have to side-hill..  I have had my 87 at where the little meter said I was about 25 degrees tip..  I wanted to jump out..
Is the full time 4WD an off road vehicle or more of a soccer mom's type of SUV?  and do the newer vehicles still have the transfer case lever on the floor or is it a push button deal for all of them now?

XREAS is a system that links the shocks together hydraulically. If the load decreases on one side, the other side will compensate. I'm no real expert on it, but searching XREAS at toyota-4runner.org will give you tons of info. Here's probably the best explaination --> http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1076&highlight=xreas

As for the 4wd, the V6 models are selectable with a knob on the dash, so it's electronic. The V8 4wd models are full time as I said, and the transfer case has a center diff. The center diff is lockable (I believe) via a button on the dash. Unlocked, it's a soccer mom 4wd system, but locked it will be alot like your '87.
