Is the load proportioning valve really necessary at rear?
« on: Dec 22, 2006, 09:21:10 AM »
I'd like to get rid of it if it provides no real value.  I'm lifted 5" and so the proportioning rod is all bent to try and maintain the stock workings of the valve.  The truck is 80% trail only with the remaining 20% driving to the trails.

I had mine un-hooked for a while. I noticed that, without it, if I got on the brakes hard the rear would lock up. That can be really bad...front and rear will swap ends. So I'd say yeah, it's important. At least on a DD. As to whether you go stock or Wilwood or Summit, don't see why it would matter. The advantage of stock is that it is self-adjusting, depending on the load in the bed.

Toyota does not seem like the kind of outfit to put something like that on a truck " just cuz".

my 85 4x2 never had one, and it didnt bother me at all....

sure the brakes would lock up if i really slammed on them, but if you know how to drive, its controllable

my 79 had one with only an in and out line, no return line, so i removed it, and in the past 2 yrs i have only regreted it once, when some little car cut me off and i locked them up and slid sideways at 40, the little car got the hell out of my way after that

I removed the whole thing and just threaded my extended rear brake line to the hard line that fed it.  I don't plan on a lot of highway driving.  Can these rear drum brakes lock up 35's to begin with?

my rear axle is out of a 94 v6, so it has the bigger brakes, and yup they lock up 35/14.5 boggers pretty good, but it depends on how much weight u have in the bed

I don't run one in my 85 and it locks up 35's quite nicely and here on the east coast of Canada we get some pretty nasty snow storms, with lots of slush and freezing rain, i have never had any problems without one.

Screw that thing. At first I was thinking I had to have some crazy adapter fitting until I realized the lines screw right together if you take the damn thing off. Yeah it locks up but you dont have ABS anyways. I've only locked up my 38 1/2 inch boggers once and I stopped pretty damn fast anyway.
