85 diff housing
« on: Dec 16, 2006, 06:14:46 AM »
How much wider is an 85 diff housing than an 82. Or is there any difference? I have the opportunity to buy and 85 ex.cab cheap to use for parts on my 82 and wasnt really going to do it if I cant benefit from the axles.

Thanks

Same width, 55.5 front and 55 rear. The front has more gussetting on the housing which is desirable and spare parts are always good to have around.

Oh ok. Thanks. I would like to find some diffs. with a little wider track that would go in pretty easy. What year axle housing should I look for? The truck that's for sale isnt in that bad of shape it runs and all and is still driven on the road but I just cant decide if it's worth it to go ahead and buy.

Thanks for the info.

If you want a wider rear axle, get a '86 or newer rear end - they are 2" wider and have bigger brakes.  The plus side is (i'm told) they bolt right in. I think you have to upgrade your brake master cylinder to a bigger one though...

Oh, and I believe tacoma's are 3" wider.  If you find one with a E-locker for cheap, get it.

Thanks. That's what I needed to know. The third's are interchangeble too arent they? I just picked up two pretty cheap to rebuild and it would be nice if they would fit too.

As of right now i am in the process of putting my e-locker in my 86 housing. I also have the complete tacoma rear end but i thought i would have to relocate the spring pads so i went with 86. Does anyone know someone who has the complete tacoma rearend in there rig? - Nick

Yeah the thirds are interchangable.  There are no stock wider front axles.  You have to custom make them or run spacers to match a front to a wider rear.

Actually the 86 and ups are 3" wider and the taco is 5". Here's everything you want to know about widths etc. http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=11245.0
I'm not sure on the perch widths. I was running a taco rear in my runner, but I switched from coils to leafs and built my own mounts so I never compared.

If your putting the e-locker in your '86 housing, check out this thread:
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/electric_locker/

This is what I will be doing as soon as I get a e-locker 3rd member

Perch width is the same.  Up to at least '89.  Maybe even up to '95.
