V6 Diff into 4 Cyl Housing?
« on: Jan 07, 2007, 09:33:25 AM »
so i have my 85 4cylinder rear housing and im trying to put a V6 diff into it, but it seems as though its just a hair too big.  is that the case?  can v6 diffs not go into 4 cylinder housings? or is it cause its a pre IFS housing?  maybe im just being stupid

I have a V6 in my front 85 housing and it fits just fine.  I'm running 5.29's (not that the gear ratio should matter I think) and it fits.  How long did you try and slid it in?  If I remember right its pretty much just the pinion thats stronger.  The ring gear is still an 8" ring gear but just a tad thicker.

yea mines 5.29d too.  i tried for a while.  it really seems as though because the ring gear is thicker that it is getting hung up

the ring is clipping the top and bottom at those notches.  on the teeth side just seems like the notches are too small

well worse come to worse just trim as littl as you can off until it fits.  Remember you can always cut more but its a lot hard to put it back on.

Just saw this. I had to grind my housing a bit also when putting in the v6 diff w/529 gears.

I think the 8.4 carrier is only in the tundra. ring and pinion is the same as the 8' diff, but the carrier if not.
