Making the 22r CARB better off camber?
« on: Dec 20, 2006, 06:43:32 PM »
What are the simple mods to do to a 22R stock carb to make it better off camber when Rockcrawling?  I've heard that adjusting the float lower helps and extending some tube on the top??  Thought I'd run it by the experts though.

Have you checked Pirate?  I believe they have a good thread on how to do this.

very easy..

Things you'll need
1. 3 ft of vacuum hose
2. 2 hose clamps
3. cheap fuel filter (I use the real cheap metal enclosed kind)
4. 1/2 drill bit and drill
5. Silicon (I use gasketmaker because its resistant to oil and grease... somewhat!)

Step 1.

Drill a hole through the top of your aircleaner, somewere near the middle where the carb sits.

Step 2.

Slip the clamp over the vacuum hose and slip the vacuum hose over your secondard jet on the card (this is what makes your carb flood out when your on a steep incline)  Once you've got it clamped good and tight on the jet then you take the other end and poke it through the aircleaner.

Step 3.

Lock the top of the aircleaner into place and route the vacuum hose down to the frame rail, hook the fuel filter to the other end with a clamp and clamp it tight.  I just used zip ties because i'm ghetto fabulous like that!

Step 4.

Silicon where you poked the vacuum hose out of the aircleaner.

Wha-LA!  Your ready to climb!

So whats happening here you may ask?

As your truck tilts the fuel starts overflowing back into itself (flooding out the carb) and obviously dies. By hooking a vacuum hose to the secondary jet instead of the fuel flooding into your carb it'll travel through the vacuum hose down into the fuel filter where it'll eventually evaporate.

I've ran my truck on very steep inclines and had great success with this method! I have also never seen it dump enough fuel to fill the filter as well so dont worry about it.

Azyota had a carb steup on his rig that worked great, something to do with lowering the float and reducing the fuel psi. Not sure exactly what else, but maybe I'll have him post up about it.  Though Shambs method seem pretty smart!! :beerchug:

How does this method compare to running an EFI setup in your opinion.  I have heard that many people run carbs in their FTOYS without a propane setup with good success.

Its worked very well for me personally (after some tinkering) but I wouldn't compare it to EFI. My truck will bog down a little bit on really steep inclines but not enough to effect anything. Obviously the 22RE isn't going to bog down at all.

If you dont have the cash to drop on an EFI conversion then i'd recommend this because it only cost's about $10 (if that) has no ill effects what so ever and works well.

So Shamb your method does not effect on road drivability at all? I am not a very good engine guy but I would assume the jet was put there for a reason other than to be blocked off or am I missing somthing?

I drove it 100 + miles twice like this before it was green stickered. Never did see much of a difference (amazing as that may sound)

Typically the secondary jet kicks in at a specific rpm range to help from starving fuel  (maybe Glen can help out on the specifics of this one?)

But cruising my truck all the way up and down Ice House Rd to the Rubicon I had that engine screaming at 3500-4000 rpm's in 3rd gear and it felt no different then if that jet wasn't plugged off.

i remember camo sayin something about using and MSD box to get a better spark so it burns all the fuel off in the cylinder.

lower the float level, that also makes a big differance
