Steering change in reverse
« on: Aug 06, 2021, 07:55:49 PM »
What changes in my steering geometry when in reverse?  My new/bigger tires rub a full lock in reverse but not going forward.

Tires rubbed on the tiny mud flap in front of the tires.  I removed them.

There is a difference in how the front axle is being torqued in reverse vs. drive.

Have someone else drive it forward / reverse while steering and watch what's going on..............

That makes sense.  in reverse the torque is is pushing the tire forward vs. pushed aft going straight ahead.  Time to contemplate clearance.  Body mods or 4Crawler 1" body lift(?)

I haven't tested full steering lock and full compression in reverse yet.  Good for DD now.

Wainiha!!...

You should NOT EVER be full lock with the steering wheel when you are in reverse or forward with a trail vehicle!!  That is the best and quickest way to bust something!!  :yikes:

Ask me how I know. :gap:

If he has the original Longfields or the current RCVs, he'll be just fine...most likely...maybe...I have been so far...

No full lock on a trail it was just a test in my yard on flat land to check clearance.  All grass.  I even try to avoid that.  Never on pavement or when 4x4ing.

I'd love the RCVs but they're not in the budget right now.  Thank you Marlin members.

When I was installing 33" tires on my 95 4runner, the tires rubbed pretty good before I adjusted the Torsion bars. When test driving before the adjustment, going forward would pull up at the fender seam and covers as the backside of the tire would come up and hit the underside of the fender, making a nasty fast thumping sound every time the tire knob smacked the fender. In reverse the tire knobs would smoothly glide down the fender cover, avoiding the gripping action, and wouldn't make much noise. I quickly realized this and drove back to the driveway in reverse to save the fender linings from getting ripped or stretched.
