Electrifying a '87 4Runner
« on: Oct 17, 2023, 07:50:04 PM »
I am going to be purchasing an '87 4Runner with no engine, trans or t/case. My plan is to install 2x AC induction motors; one by where the trans would mount and the other a bit further back. The rear drive shaft would be replaced with a shorter front drive shaft. I will locate the batteries in the engine bay to keep the weight distribution the same. The converter will mount where the radiator would be so that it's air-cooled. With this setup I could select between FWD, RWD and AWD pretty easily but I want a 4Low option and this brings up some head scratching.

4Low obviously requires a transfer case but without a transmission, and with 2 motors how would this work? AFAIK there is no true 4x2 transfer case available but there are of course, crawl boxes that might do the trick if I were to machine some kind of adapter. I would need two of these crawl boxes, one mounted to each motor. The crawl boxes would attach to a slip yoke driveshaft then I'd have a re-geared e-lock diff...

Is there some other solution (other than combustion engine) that I'm missing?

I would start with seeing if you can buy a speed limiter or a rheostat for EV motors, over trying to use two transfer cases.
