One of my friends got a complete 22re that was having the same type of problems.  After it was disassembled, there was this huge ridge on one side of the cylinder and nothing on the other.  This was definately the strangest thing I have ever seen.  The crank and rods looked ok as well as the pistons.  The only way this block could be used would have been machining it for some big block chevy pistons.  Out of balance?  Machined off center from the factory?  Bent crank?  We couldn't find anything wrong other than the block was ruined.  My last "budget" 22r rebuild consisted of mix and match rods and used pistons from different motors.  I flog the crap out of this motor and no trouble yet.  Less than 200 into it.  I only replaced all gaskets, rings, rod/main bearings, timing set and oil pump.  How do your cylinder walls look?
