If your cable is broken, I have successfully repaired two broken cables.
I ground each end where it broke down, and then welded the two back together, and then ground the welds down.
One of the two that I've fixed is in my truck right now and its working like a champ. I've max'd my speedometer a couple times at about 90 MPH (the 1st gens only go up to I think 85).
