If you didn't have the head resurfaced and inspected when you replaced the HG, it could be why you have had high engine temps since, and now overheated.

As for resurfacing the head, I think my little milling machine might be up to the task... maybe.

Surfacing is only part of it, can you pressure test it as well, cracks aren't always easy to find visually.
