90 Daihatsu Rocky (Po' Mans Land Cruiser)
« on: Sep 09, 2012, 04:53:21 PM »
Have nearly finished getting my 90 Rocky on the road. It needed a fender, bumper, and transmission and I decided to just remove them from my other 90 Rocky.

This one has Off-Road Package which includes rear Torsen LSD, manual hubs, inclinometer. Has Convenience Package, and Chrome Package, but the front bumper isn't.

Had some clunking at front, some research led me to some ZZW30 Toyota mr2 Spyder sway link bushings as a replacement for the sway to control arm bushings. They fit and fixed clunking.

Little project I've been working on some, turning a $25 TJ bumper into Daihatsu bumper. Still have to add some turn signals and whatnot. Gonna use some mk1 mr2 fronts with clear covers.

Some pics on parts Rocky.

Jeep put a whole bunch of damn holes in that bumper, ditched the extra other crap too. Still more work to do.

I sure like my Rocky, and have put a lot of mr2 parts I had sitting around on it.

Alternator upgrade, I bought a new Denso for my old 86 mr2 and then pulled engine not long after. Modded the upper mount on the Rocky, swapped pulleys and fitted a .5" longer belt on. Now I have a new 70amp to replace the 50 amp.

No pics, but the Toyota 4ag dizzy o-ring is same as the Daihatsu HD-E dizzy o-ring, and I had a couple spares.

Had to buy a thermostat, found an OEM Toyota that fits.

Had a fairly new Denso fuel filter from a 4ag, about an inch longer than the Daihatsu Denso, but bolted right in.

And something I think it should have had from the factory, a coolant bleeder. Again from a mk1 mr2 and was just sitting in a box.

Cleaned up some dead pics.

Still digging the Rocky, had some major clunking in front end over the summer. Traced to knuckle bushings, book said replace knuckle and halfshaft. So it was a project. I have a spare set of halfshafts and front diff, so IFS stays for a while.

The bushing.

Machine shop wanted a small fortune for a custom turned brass bushing. So it was modded and a metric roller bearing fitted. $30 from amazon for bearings.

All fitted with new seal.

New ball joints, redid CV boots after pic.

Made a knuckle bearing grease tool.

And some gaskets.

Got new KYB shocks over summer as well, and some wicked bright reverse lights.

Gonna be a while. Want to get the slight bodywork and some paints next spring. This is a long term project.
