what I'm guessing is maybe its the "3rd gen front axle" being the 3rd type of axle design under these trucks.
My thoughts exactly:
When you say 3rd gen axle housing you mean it is from a 1985 pickup or 4Runner, yes?
But he replied,
Its a 3rd gen pickup axle I'm pretty sure.
To which case you'd be correct in saying,
if its a "3rd gen truck axle" then you have IFS.
In this case, the core issue is the unorthodox way of labeling the 1986-1995 IFS system as a "pickup axle".
Any way to tell?
If you are referring to a live/solid axle, then yes, from 79coyotefrg's reply,
79 and 80 had no gusset under the housing.
81-83 had a short gusset under the center of the axle
84-85 (in the USA anyway) had the gusset go all the way across the bottom of the axle.
