Need Help Identifying Transmission?
« on: Jun 03, 2013, 01:08:14 PM »
Hey everyone I'm brand new to this Forum!

I have a 1979 Toyota Hilux 4x4 I just bought for $800, Yes I pretty much stole it from him. It has a 3rd gen front axle housing. And also doesn't have the L43 transmission ( Witch came in this model and year correct ? ). Here's the problem I don't know what transmission it is and cant find anywhere to identify it. I need to buy a outboard shaft seal and a shifter bushing but I dont know what to get them for. If anyone can help id be extremely happy. Also I did try the search engine didnt help me much Im new to this forum set-up.

Thanks!

:welcome: to our forums!! Yes it sounds like you scored on that truck! When you say 3rd gen axle housing you mean it is from a 1985 pickup or 4Runner, yes?

doesn't have the L43 transmission ( Witch came in this model and year correct ? )
Yes this is correct!

I don't know what transmission it is and cant find anywhere to identify it.
The easiest way would be to reply back with some pictures of your transmission. If this is not an option, then please visit this page, http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmission/rebuilt-complete, and see if you can visually compare and identify your transmission. If you've got it out of the truck, we also have a small table with front input bearing part number identification at the lower right corner of this page, http://www.marlincrawler.com/tech/transmission/transmission-gear-ratio-chart, which may help as well.

I love your truck already because it has ... Round Headlights!! :boobs:

HAHA Thanks for the imput Mike.

Yeah I waited so long so I could find the pickup I wanted with was the first year of 4x4. Im rebuilding my front headlights to be full led. Dont get me wrong I like the square but I like body style and everything way better of the 79.

Its a 3rd gen pickup axle I'm pretty sure. But not %100. Any way to tell? And I have to wait untill I am on and off for a few days before the forum will allow me to post pictures. I think its a w56 but im not sure yet. Ill visually inspect it when I go to my shop tonight.

And I need info on dual transfer cases. Do I buy the add on transfer case ( when I find the money ) or do I have to buy a all new transfer case ??

I know how to work on a lot of stuff this is just my first Rock Crawler project and im wayyyyy more excited then I should be !

if its a "3rd gen truck axle" then you have IFS.  what I'm guessing is maybe its the "3rd gen front axle" being the 3rd type of axle design under these trucks.
79 and 80 had no gusset under the housing.
81-83 had a short gusset under the center of the axle and the 84-85 (in the USA anyway) had the gusset go all the way across the bottom of the axle.

My thoughts exactly:
When you say 3rd gen axle housing you mean it is from a 1985 pickup or 4Runner, yes?
But he replied,
Its a 3rd gen pickup axle I'm pretty sure.
To which case you'd be correct in saying,
if its a "3rd gen truck axle" then you have IFS.
In this case, the core issue is the unorthodox way of labeling the 1986-1995 IFS system as a "pickup axle".
Any way to tell?
If you are referring to a live/solid axle, then yes, from 79coyotefrg's reply,
79 and 80 had no gusset under the housing.
81-83 had a short gusset under the center of the axle
84-85 (in the USA anyway) had the gusset go all the way across the bottom of the axle.
