Need help. I don't own a 4wd Toyota but all my "Toyota transmission" searches all comes back to this site. Unfortunately due to my newb status, I can't post pics. I have a 1985 Toyota pickup with a 5 speed tranny that whines really bad on 1,2,3 and 5th gears. 4 is fine. Also I have a really bad leak from the transmission. I was able to acquire what I know at least is a 2wd 5 speed transmission.but I don't know what "model" it is? I want to be able to at least get this one rebuilt and then swap out my current one. This is my daily driver so I don't want too much down time. Want to be able to purchase the correct rebuild kit. Any other suggestions/info are welcomed. Please. Thanks guys.

I've looked at those pics. Closest one I can see would be the W55... Although the center section isn't aluminum like the one in the pic. Would that matter?

If its an 85 its probably a W55if you look under the hood look for the plate on the firewall that says model number and all of that information will be in the long numeric code. It will have it broken up in brackets for you and is easy to figure out. Engine, transmission, transfer case, cab type, frame and model number are all on the truck so just look around. Either the  plate under the hood or the sticker in the driver door. Then find a junkyard

That's the only way I know mine is an 88 manufactured in November 87 with. W56, 22rec, rf1a, and all that jazz

Thank you gor the info, but the tranny in question isn't the one in the truck now. It's the one I aquired for cheap and don't have any specufucs on it except it was in a 84-86 toyota truck. I do know it's a 5 speed and for a 2wd. I looked at it closer and found some stamped numbers on it. On the steel center section is... 33111-20090. And on the tail end (under shifter) is... 33141-20090.
I hope they mean something...

There should be a little piece of metal that hangs off lime a tag on one of the bolts or drain plugs. Its proooobably ripped off though. My bet for an 84-86 is W55 and if not, probably W56. they're very similar so differences are minor and shouldn't matter either way. Good luck!

Check out that little grid though. I will see what else I can come up with that's more specific

Nevermond that chart is waaayyyy incomplete. My bet is w55 though. Either that or g series but probably not

^x2. If it were for 4wd you'd see the output shaft with the plate ready to accept a transfer case.

No sir. My truck is a 2wd. Might be the wrong forum since everyone is 4wd but all my searches lead back to this site. Figure somebody should know.

looks like a L43 to me
It's what I thought at first (according to the chart)but this one I picked up is 5 spd. ???

emsvitil

Not an L43 or L series as the top forward section isn't flat.

If the center-forward case is iron, it could be a W50

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_W_transmission.

Do a google image search on 'w50 transmission' and you'll get pictures that look like yours.

If you rebuild it, make sure that the L shaped lever from the stick to the internals in the rear upper housing is machined from one piece of metal rather than 2 pieces welded together.    (weld broke on my sisters 76 corona with W50)
