Coolant overflow tank cracked, help fixing?
« on: Jan 12, 2016, 03:43:09 PM »
Today someone noticed a nice puddle under the front of my truck, where in my coolant had been leaking into a foamy mess. Luckily, it is just the overflow tank, which is an easy fix... Right?
I was thinking about removing the tank, dumping the coolant into a jug so I can poor it back in, and then finding the hole and patching it. I was planning to use some liquid silicone compound that I already have, hoping it would dry fast. Does it really matter what I use to fill the crack or hole? Maybe some gasket maker? would that work? Or any recommendations?
Then, how much coolant do I put in to make up for the lost coolant?
Thanks so much, I appreciate it.

Tie wrap a 1 liter bottle in there............

 :cheese:

Add coolant when it's hot,   About 7/8 full.

Get a plastic water bottle, cut it and lay it over the damaged part. Then jb weld it together

Can also get a glass alcohol bottle or similar.. large flask of JD.. melt a hole in the lid and shove the overflow tube inside of it.

Foamy puddle sounds more like it was being pushed out of the overflow.

If it is just a crack, any type of sealant that you have that adheres to plastic should be good, just sand down the area so the sealant has something to hold onto.

Once reinstalled, just fill to the full line on the tank.

I think replacement tanks are relatively cheap. Or use a Gatorade bottle or similar. Top off the radiator if it's low, then just fill whatever reservoir you use about 3/4 full. If I fill mine to the upper line while cold it will spill out some while hot.
