Fixing pinholes in gas tank
« on: Apr 19, 2007, 07:30:49 AM »
Does anyone have a good solution for fixing pinholes in a gas tank?

I was thinking JB Weld, or trying something like this:

I guess in a pinch it will work ok, but chances are the tank is rusting from the inside out and it won't be long before it starts leaking again. I would just find another tank and replace it.

I was afraid of that. I just wheeled the truck a few weeks ago for the first time (since I bought it, and probably the first time in years), and sloshing around a full tank of new gas probably stirred up some crud on the bottom of the tank.

Any ideas where to get a brand new tank?

Thanks for the offer jimbo. I'll keep that in mind.

Now for my next question - what years of tanks will fit in a short bed first gen pickup?

I'm going to try and hunt the junkyards, but around here they are a little light on Toyotas, and when I ask who has them all, they laugh me off the property.

measure the tank, and get something thats close.  with mods, you can make anything fit, but I bet if you look for a small domestic truck (s10, ranger, etc.) they'll have something that'll work.

see if there are any local toyota wreckers... we actually have some here, that buy all the toyota stuff, so that otehr junkyards have no toyota stuff and they can be a monopoly

Many, many miles from CA. I'm in Arkansas, but if you want to ship it, I could probably do that.

I'm gonna soap my first, then try the permatex stuff if it still leaks. I'm tired of it sitting in my garage, I want to wheel!!  :driving:

Just call your friends and see who's got what. Your truck is a first gen shortbed right? I know Glen was parting a 2wd and I have a 1st gen tank. You have my number right?

My Bike got a small pin hole in the side of its gas tank, and the soap bar method worked for about 5 mins. I went to Autozone and bought Seal-All, Quick Drying Gas & Oil Resistant.

I think it was about $9, I repaired the tank last summer with about 3 coats of this stuff, and its still holding up very well today. This stuff worked so well, I carry it in my tool box in case something like this happens to someone on the trail.

Seal-All Works very well, money well spent.

BigMike

I have used that stuff before too! Nice product and worth every penny. Don't put it on something you may want to remove later. :twocents:

Well, I got some Seal-All (for less than $3 btw), and it seems to work well. So far I only have 2 gallons in the tank, and no leaks  Thanks for the suggestion BigMike!

We'll see what happens on a full tank, and after I wheel it for a weekend.

gitinit, I still want your tank, just in case :crossed:

PS - thank you Toyota for putting a drain plug in your tanks. It's a lifesaver.

Are you serious? It looked so thin. I put on about 3 or 4 coats of glue, and it has never leaked :dunno:
