Hi Guys,

I've been having this annoying starting issue with my 88 hilux v6.  Right now it turns on fine, but when I drive it somewhere and try and restart it to leave I just get a "click" when i turn the key.  Using a jump pack usually starts her right up, but that trick seems to be failing now too.  Based on the symptoms I thought it was a bad battery or not enough voltage to crank the starter.  I've taken it to 2 mechanics already.  The first said it was a bad starter so i replaced that.  Issue did not go away.  The second mechanic was a hilux/runner specialist who said he could not replicate the problem.

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.  I can post a video if

Did either mechanic actually look it over or did they just pop the hood or give advice from 5 feet away?  Check all connections from the ignition switch all the way through the system, but only after having the battery charged and load tested.  Do not spend money on somebody conjecturing.  A test light is your friend

I had that same issue in my 88 4cyl I changed my starter and haven't had the problem since then.

Check or replace the battery cables.

Make sure you have good grounds.

have ya thrown a multi meter on it to check volts, and if alt is charging

Voltage drop during crank from positive battery directly where it hooks to starter. Could have a bad wire. Had it happen on a lot of vehicles.

Happened to me as well. Start cold fine but when hot- no start. As copper wires heat up they don't conduct as well. if there is a bad connection somewhere the heat could make it worse and be the tipping between a start and no start. connections are the number one problem with most electrical problems. mine isn't fuel injected tho so i don't know bout the crank sensor

Sometimes when the ignition switch gets old you will not get full power through to the starter. I've always just added a light relay at the solenoid to boost the power back up from the battery.
