If you've seen my deer thread, you know why I am looking to build a stout bumper.  Quite simply, I want to start a thread for front bumper ideas, and am down to see rear bumper ideas too.  Post up

Of all the first gen pics I have saved, this is the only front bumper idea I like, though it is less substantial than I'd want.  Probably want a bigger hoop and some better grille/light protection

Here is one with a more protection.

I don't really care for the slant of the bars, I would run them straighter, more in line with the oem body/grill design.

Maybe a combo of both(no photo/shop :gap:)

I would also soften the plate edges some to follow the 1st gens softer body lines.

Maybe something like this if you like the ARB design.
'90 black X-cab mod'd 3.0, 33's/4.88's, rear ARB, custom bumpers, sliders, safari rack, etc.
'91 Blue X-cab 22re, 35's/5.29's,Truetrac front, ARB rear, dual cases, and custom Safari flatbed, bumper, interior.
The money pit '87 Supra resto/mod

mine is a 2nd gen but the kinda ideas are the same. I saw the damage to your grill and It reminded me of mine as it had the same kind of damage. I didn't want to just throw another brittle plastic grill on and have to break into little pieces again

I can appreciate it, but it is a little too mad-max-ish for me and would look out of place on a first gen.  My favorite design so far is the last one I posted, and I'm thinking of maybe making one of these for the bed, too

That last one you posted would have scared that buck right out of your way. Dig the bed bar idea, could double as a canopy frame should you need to shelter something.
'85 Xtra-cab, 4.5" Downey Off-Road lift, 12-15 KM2's on American Racing Baja's, Marlin's-4.88's & 4.7's, Downey Off-Road CAI, Marlin rear bumper & sliders

kneedownnate

My thoughts exactly!  I'd also like to be able to chuck my kayak or crawdad up there and still have full bed space available.

No new ideas, so I need to either find somebody in the area to help me build the tube bumper or buy this and make it fit  http://chico.craigslist.org/pts/5386189211.html

I will be cutting off Trixxies bumper with the leaf spring hanger...here within the next couple weeks...

kneedownnate

Huh... what do you think you'd want and where you is?  I know you're not super far from me, just wanna make sure you're within "worth it to get a bumper" distance  :wink2:

I like the one kneedownnate posted a picture of. Where could one find a bumper like that? I do not have the means of building my own but am in the market for an aftermarket bumper.

kneedownnate

Which one, the one on the truck or the one on the ground?  You can buy the one on the ground anywhere, it's a warn winch.  The one on the truck you'd need to get the specs for and find a competent fab shop or local guy who could do a good job and won't rape you.

Thanks for the reply kneedownnate . I was talking about the one on the front of the pre 85 in the first picture. It really looks cool to me but I have not found a good Fab Shop in MS that wont try to break it off in you. I know a few guys that can weld and will see if any of them would be willing to tackle something like this.

I have an 85 Sr5 4x4 and wasn't sure if the Warn would bolt right up. The specs show the Warn is for 89-95 so I'm sure it would still require some fab work too.

I'll share with you what I have done in the past:

I find someone selling a bumper I liked, (happened to be the 3rd gen WARN rock crawler bumper..) and simply asked for a few dimensions...

Then I took it upon myself to download, and learn how to use AutoCAD student version for free, and designed this baby:

This is the pic of it rendered up on a friend's computer...

Still some work to do, but now I can do directly to my favorite steel mill in Portland, and have them CNC laser cut this from 3/16ths...

They've done it for me in the past with smaller projects like this York OBA adapter plate:

Offroad Toy Outfitters - The best place to find an experienced-based Toyota shop in the PNW and get hands-on with your next project!
2008 4runner V6: Manual transfer case swapped, 4.88s, rear ARB, custom fabricated bumpers, sliders and more!

1993 Standard cab chassis. 1989 Extended Cab. 22R-E BO .020, ENGNBLDR 261c cam, Doug Thorley Tri-Y header, Straight Pipe through a Flowmaster 40, ARB Rear Locker, York OBA with fabricated bracket.
Projects waiting in my shop: '83 Front Axle, TG Sliders, second tcase, XD 4.70 gears!
