This was my 83 in 91.  Sorry for the pic of a pic.  It's poster size behind broken glass way up on the wall of the shop.  This is the rig that started it all for me.  Must have lifted it a dozen different times.  In the end it had 39's with custom 15x14 wheels with 3" backspacing.  It was a Pismo machine / weekend cabin...  Never should have sold it. :hammerhead:

In the early 90's, I was rocking the 1978 El Camino.  Yes, laugh it up, but it did things that it shouldn't have.  But I had some great times drifting it in corners!

wasn't in the 90s(mid 2000s) but my first vehicle was a 1964 chevy short/stepside and I know exactly the smell you speak of, I bought a new seat and that seemed to fix most of the smell.

This thread separates the men from the boys... or at least in the 90s. I was a 10 speeder back then too. My first vehicle was an 89 bronco though. I bombed around on that thing like a maniac.  :shake:

Bought this in '86 and still have it.  Needs paint & body work really bad.

That's a scan of a 4x6 film print taken back in '87 or so, right after I added those bitchin fog lights to the grills (I came to my senses eventually and they're gone now.

What's the drivetrain in your 'Bird? A guy I worked with had a '71 TA that I absolutely LUSTED after. Blueprinted RA IV 400,4 speed,3.23 Posi, tricked out suspension,it was OMG!! fast, and LOOKED new,and 100% original. :gap:

It originally came with a 400 (Formula 400 model) and TH400 auto trans with 3.08 gears.  Pretty low-optioned car with deluxe interior, exterior trim package, auto trans, AC, and heavy duty suspension being the only options.

I've since added the factory Ram Air aircleaner and associated parts so it breathes through the scoops now.  I haven't had very good luck with the engines in it...  Rebuilt the original 400 then spun 4 of the main bearings.  Built a 455 block with 428 crank (440 cubes) for it with ported heads and a roller cam, added some headers a higher stall converter and 3.23 gears and got it running 12.60s @ 107 on street tires before that engine ate the thrust bearing.  I finally figured out the problem - TH400 was built as a race transmission with full manual valvebody and when done like that they run at full internal pressure all the time.  Fine for a trailered race car, death for a street car as the trans is trying to push the converter into the back of the engine all the time and at low RPMS/idle the oil pressure is too low and it eats the thrust bearings.  Got the trans redone and put back to auto shift and put a junkyard 455 in it and that's how it sits now.  Total career change/starting over at the bottom and a re-focus on things like saving for retirement and buying a house have that project on the back burner and the car is in storage for now.

I started a body-off restoration on it at one point but never got to the body work and paint so other than the engine and paint/body work everything is brand-new mechanically.  Tubular control arms, subframe connectors, big swaybars, Koni shocks, heavier springs, Global West bushings throughout.  Back then 15" performance tires were still available so even had a set of custom 15x10" wheels made for it that look stock and keep the "poverty cap" hubcaps but can fit 265/50s up front and 305/50s out back.  No good 15" tires are made any more so when I get back to working on it again in the next couple of years will step up to modern retro-look 18" wheels.

Here's a picture of it after I got the 440 ci engine in it and was hoping to get to the body & paint work. This was about 14 years ago...

Here's one at the autocross (the import guys hated my big, loud musclecar that ran as good as a lot of them):
