88 runner on an 85 xcab frame
« on: May 20, 2015, 09:45:07 PM »
I have been wanting a 4runner for quite some time but my xcab was in too good of shape to swap out. que last summer... driving some dirt roads the truck was flopped at speed and the cab was twisted. after driving like that for a bit the clutch went and it was decide that a 4runner was in her future.
As it sat.
85 xcad 22re 3000 on rebuild

Front axle:
arb with 5.29
dirty thirties and chromo hub gears
warn hubs
trunion eliminators
diff armor, trussed, knuckle gussets

Rear axle
Detroit with 5.29s
chromo shafts
disk conversion

drivetrain
22re
w56
dual cases 2.28/4.7

suspension
4in trail gear front spings axle pushed 3in forward
63in chevys in rear

The Rest
TG hydro assist
40in mtrs
20lb powertank (also running arb)
2in square tube bed
interior cage
t-case ebrake
fj master cylinder

I started the runner by cutting out the rear wheel wells and moving them back 10in. and tubed them to fit the wheel base and tires.
once the truck was torn down it was over to my buddies to use the lift. getting the body on was all trial and error. first thing to go were the sliders, they were in the way of the lift arms coming down. then as we came down we had to cut the front fenders wells for the shock hoops then the crossmember under the cab then clearance the core support for the steering box then pull the exhaust mount off the frame rail, cut the mounts for the bed off and last was to cut out the tunnel to get it all the way down. once it was down it was time for body mounts. the far forward and front of cab mounts lined up perfect. used 3in square cut in wedges to make the three rear mounts. once lined up and burned on she was bolted down and pulled out looking like we meant to do it. only remaining issue is that the frame although bobbed is still 2in. too long so I can't get the tail gate back on until I do some figuring with the frame.
now that she is bolted down it is time to start putting it back together!

To Do
reinstall wiring harness
install interior
make new tunnel
move battery to back
mount fuel cell recessed in back
fab full interior cage
put engine compartment back together
new crossmember
hang exhaust
remount sliders
build rear bumper with swing down tire carrier

I'm sure the list will continue to grow but for now I'm hoping to have it up and running in 6 weeks or so.

That seems to be all that photobucket wants me to share for now. So until I can better figure out the picture share thing here is a link to some pics of the truck after the flop, creased the floorboard up under the clutch and the fire wall. The new runner body, moving the wheelwells, mounting the body, and getting it home as it currently sits on rollers.

so I've been pretty busy and haven't had a whole lot of time for the 4runner, but I have managed to get a few things done.
I got the dash fitted in, then pulled and painted Toyota grey.
Clearanced the front fenders/firewall.
Got the tans tunnel frame built and started welding it in.
And got the runner sitting on its proper rubber.
Hope to get the rear shocks hung, fuel cell mount built, finish welding the tunnel in, and get the battery relocated to the back this weekend.
