3-4" lift and fuel mileage
« on: Mar 05, 2015, 08:18:59 PM »
Hello folks as the subject says I am curious as to what kind of fuel mileage some of you get. It doesn't matter if you have a yota that's versatile or is straight dedicated to crawling I still am interested to know. But for shits n giggles let's say you put in a 3 or 4 inch suspension lift and are running tires no bigger than 33" and have a carbureted(weber) 22r. How much do you guys think that will affect fuel mileage. Looking forward to the replies :)

not sure if this fits what your asking about, but im on 37s and unsure about lift, just RUF and 63s with fenders trimmed, semi built 22re with 5.29s in the axles, im getting great mileage as my runner is still sorta a DD, by great i mean in the 20ish mpg range

lift size wont really affect mpg unless u are sky high and create alot of wind drag, it also depends more on your gearing, 33s the ideal gearing would be 4.88s, i had 35s with 4.10s for short while and it sucked, horrible mileage and no power at all.

Yep, unmatched gears and tires will effect mpg's far more than any amount of lift will.  I can't seem to do worse than 23 mpg's with my '91 on 35's loaded down with an 500lbs of gear, and my rig has a lot of non aerodynamic surfaces.  Suspension lift is a combined 3.5" plus the additional lift of the 35's.

My 1980 got 21 highway with 33s and 4.37 gears and a 2" or so lift.  All around driving I probably get 17-18 mpg with 31s-33s.  I think gearing and tire size is a bigger factor effecting mileage than lift.  It's not like these things cut the wind much better stock vs. slight lift.

Right now I have some 35s on it and it is a hog, maybe mid teens at best.  35" tires and 4.37 gears have exceeded the doable gearing threshold.  It still wheels good though...
