Tow rig fuel mileage
« on: Apr 16, 2006, 03:09:05 PM »
What do you guys all get? I have a 98 dodge ram with a 5.2 and 33's and I get 7 miles to the gallon in the city. I was just wondering what you all get and if there are any tricks to help that. I put a K&N fipk on the other day so maybe that will help a little bit.

I can get 21 on the freeway. I work construction and am always driving around the jobsite. On the job, I get about 12, in the city I get about 16. Towing my rig, it's about 14-16 depending on where I go. This is on a '97 ram with a CTD that has a bit of motor work done.

Unfortunately for your truck, I've never heard good numbers out of the 318s or the 360s in those model years. A friend with a '98 with a 360 gets 11 on the freeway and about 7 or 8 around town.

My dad's 97 GMC with the 5.7L 350 gets 12-13 city dry.  16 freeway.  I haven't clocked it towing though.  But i know it isn't good at all.

My 01 F-250 powerstroke gets 12 city.  16 freeway.  about 14 towing freeway, and it goes down to about 9 towing in the city.

I have an 01 Silverado 2500 HD crew cab short bed. 6 inch RCD, 35 inch BFG's with the 6.0.  It has a programmer and cold air intake (airaid) and running up and down the road I can touch 13 mpg on a good day.

Towing the S-10 it drops off to 9 mpg.

you'll be lucky to get 10mpg  out of the gas burning dodge,

deisels will consistently get 16-20 mpg depending on the driver and gearing

a cummins  is happiest around 1800

oh well I am very lucky, I filled up my first full tank after putting my FIPK on and it boosted my city mileage to 10 mpg. I am getting headers and exhaust now too so I am going to be saving even more gas YAY!!!!!!!!

do they make toneau covers that are easy to put on and take off? because I use my bed for alot of things so I would have to remove it every once in a while.  also they did do that test on myth busters where they had one pickup with then tail gate down and one with it up and the one with it up got better gas mileage.

Heard about that episode but never saw it. A year or 2 back, talked with some people that said they did wind tunnel testing on this concept. Tailgate up actually allows an air bubble to form in the bed that allows the air to flow over and around the back of the truck. Tailgate down allows the air coming over the top to push down on the bed of the truck increasing drag and decreasing mileage. Of course lucky me, the PO of my Dodge installed an expanded metal tailgate so my a$$ is dragging.  :talkingn:

Thats basiclly what they found out on Mythbusters. I think a tounneu cover does the same as a tailgate down.
