89 22re running real rough and high squeal at 2500 rpm
« on: Jan 18, 2015, 10:27:33 PM »
So a while back I was driving to work and our of the blue my check engine light flashes on and cuts the power to my truck  going 60 on the freeway, I give it some gas and it powers through it. Ever since then it has a nasty squeal I though it was my leaky power steering pump that squealed too so I changed it. Now I'm running into a different problem I can only raise the rpms to around 2500 before I hear this awful squealing sound i give it some gas and the truck speed does not Change and it has no torque I just changed the fuel injectors and the spark plugs and now it runs real rough, I adjusted  the idle air screw now it has correct idle but still no power  it threw a code 43 I found a leak on the cold start injector gasket so I fixed that then I reset the ecu and I let the truck warm Up and I adjusted the idle once more so it's back to normal idle. But I still  have no power and a nasty squeal at 2500 rpms and above . I'm so tired of troubleshooting this dam noise. Does anyone have similar symptoms ?

How many miles on the motor?  Rebuilt recently?  Do a compression check?

Possibly could be a spun bearing in the bottom end.

Ive never had a truck with fuel injection, but my guess is it sucked a piece of intake manifold gasket ,try spraying quick start or wd-40 around the intake area, see if your idle goes up when you do that? IDK

Get a piece of wooden Dowel, stick one end up to your ear, have somebody get it up to screeching rpm, use Dowel to pin point where noise is coming from

I found the problem. So I drove it around for about an hour and then when I got home I checked the valve lash and to my suprise on the intake side of the camshaft lobe is ground down. I'm not sure how this happened the motor only has 10k miles on the rebuild.  So now I'm on the hunt for a new cam, I was thinking a 261c cam from lowrange off road. What's everyone's thoughts on the crawler cam ?

Your first thoughts should be why did the cam go flat. Sounds like lack of lubrication to me!!

Yah I was wondering about that too, but why would one lobe wear out and not the rest. My oil pump is brand new, hell   my engine is practically new. I'm just gonna get new rockers and a cam with my tax return and hope nothing else goes wrong. Does anyone recommend a good break in oil/ builders grease.

Just because it was rebuilt recently, doesn't meant they did it right.  I see alot of guys rebuilding 22r's all day long, and yet they don't take the block in and have them cleaned.  And make sure the oil/water galleys are clean and free of debris.  You can toss in bearing caps, pistons, timing chain, seals pumps, and a new head, with a blocked oil galley, your gonna toast something.
