22re rod knock fix
« on: Oct 24, 2014, 11:55:28 PM »
91. I have red a lot and listened and everything points to rod knock. I'm broke and somewhat mechanically inclined. CAN I JUST REPLACE THE RODS? Is there any thread with instructions?

having a rod knock doesnt always require replacing the rods, its usually the rod bearing itself being shot, if the bearings are spun so bad that it got to the rod journel itself u can always have your existing rods machined for a bigger bearing and replace bearings and get the crank machined and polished and toss it all back together.

If you are lucky the cheapest fix is drop the pan, mic the rod, and if in spec., replace the rod bearings, and run a little heavier oil.

I just went through this with an '84 22re, I ended up having to rebuild it.  It cost about $650 for a shop to turn the crank, supply me with new pistons, piston rods, bearings, gaskets, etc.  For an idea of what all the parts to rebuild it yourself might cost, Rockauto.com has most.
