4.10
4.88
5.29
5.71

I'll be running 35's or 37's with an Aussie locker front and rear behind a 22RE.

Also, who's R&P do you recommend?
This will be a trail only vehicle.

If you plan to just stay with 35s then I highly recommend against using 5.29s despite what many say to be the "ideal ratio for 35s" With my 35s and 5.29s, doing 80 mph is a bit over 3,500 rpm and I hate it.

I got the 5.29s because I plan on going to 37s this summer, then I will love the 5.29s.

But if you are going to run 35s, then go with the 4.88s and be happy :)

If you are gonna make it a trail only rig, get 4.10's.  Trust me, I learned this weekend in the middle of our wheelin trip why 5.29's suck.

I still have my stockers and I am gonna use em now.  I will say I got 2 good years of use out of my front 5.29's without breaking and I flog the crap out of my rig.  But when I really needed a working axle, they let me down.

If you dont need to do 70 on the highway, do yourself a favor and go with 4.10's.

85 Runner, 5" All-Pro Extreme Lift, Complete Marlin T-Case with new TS 4.7 gears, Super Birfields(Longfields), 5:29's, Detroited front, Spooled rear, 36" TSL's, Bikini top.

Yes, Livin in Kansas sucks azz!!

trail only you could run the 4.88's with the 37's too. I'm going to give 38's a shot with my 4.88's hell Whitey's probly running 4.10's with his 38's

Im running 4.88s and 37s on my truck and i drive it every day.  Off road driving is great cause the slightly higher ratio gives you the ability to wheel speed when you need it and be able to crawl up anythig.  If you are going to run a dual ultimate you dont loose any crawl ability, 206:1 vs. 223:1 with 5.29s plus the 4.88s have more pinion teeth so they are stronger than 5.29s.   :turtle:  :usa:

This is great! so much info...!!!
I'd like to quit thinking of the present as some minor insignificant preamble to something else~~~~~

Mike has a point, I drove my truck for one long trip with 4.88's and 33's and the rpm's were a bit high for my liking. But there is a tradeoff, it revs quicker, more pulling power if you need, easier to get going from a dead stop etc....  I say 4.88 with 35's   :twocents:

4.88..much stronger the 5.29..

If you are going to use lower gears in the transfercase I would run 4.88's with 35"-37" If not go 5.29's

If you are building a trail only type of rig the 4.88 gears are substantially stronger than 5.29.  I have 33 inch tires with 4.88 gears and a Detroit Locker in my rear differential.  I tried to purchase a used spare axle from Marlin and was told to save my money because the ring & pinion was my weak link.  Knowing that the gear reduction between 4.88 and 5.29 is only about a 10% gear reduction (I think I was told that the 4.88 was 60% stronger but don't quote me) this seems like a poor place to sacrifice strength.  The only reason for 5.29 gears would be on-road performance  The difference between 2.28 and 4.7 transfer case gears is more than a 100% reduction and duals is obviously way more.  If you are building a trail only rig that is Toyota and you are on the Marlin BB I will assume that you either have or are planning for transfer case gears making the difference between 4.88 and 5.29 gears on the trail a moot point.  Why make the drive train any weaker than necessary when it isn't a significant off-road performance gain?   :twocents:

p.s. Let me know what you choose.

it depends on how much road use your truck sees. if you mostly drive trails you want 488 because of their strength. although 529s are better for highway or higher speeds.i reccomend 488 for their strength. :beerchug:

i ran stock 4.10 with 37"ssr it was ok no use of 4 high the clutch wouldnt hold but did ok in low. i run 5.29 with a v6 third now and hevent broke them yet. 5500rpm and side step the clutch on dry pavement in 2low and no breakage.

I vote for 3.90s.  10 pinion teeth just like a 4.10 but the teeth are thicker.

86yota

Just kidding.  Hey are 4.10s available new?  Arn't most aftermarket gear sets 4.11s.  9 and 37, instead of 10 and 41?

Hyena

I have 5.29's with 35's and its not that bad.  I planned on going 37's later so thats one of the reasons i went with the 5.29's.  I have ran 37's for a few days and i think my truck drove better then with the 35's.
