Which National Park?
« on: May 29, 2014, 09:32:34 PM »
So, we are coming down to visit family in California next month.  I wish I had more money and time, or I would be hitting up some of the buddies for some trail time.  But not this time.     We are on a budget this year.  Going to see aunt, and cousins in Fresno (well Kingsburg now), and then down to Riverside for more cousins, and then back to Kingsburg, and then on to Redding.  Redding is the true last stop as to why we are heading down to Cali.

While we are in Kingsburg, the family wants to see a National Park.  (well the wife does, she loves getting magnets from places we have been to)  So, which NP is the place to go?  Kings Canyon & Sequoia, or the classic Yosemite?   I know the Yosemite is the one everybody will flock too, but I don't care, as long as there is cool things to see.

Coming from Kingsburg, Yosemite is over twice as far as Kings Canyon & Sequoia.  And that might be the deciding factor.

If you don't want to spend the gas to get to Yosemite, Kings and Sequoia are definitely a park to see. I grew up in Visalia so they were really close. Depending on which park you hit, or do both, Grant grove in Kings has a cool trail to walk by the General Grant tree and others, Hume lake is a cool place to check out and also has some good trout fishing, Lodgepole in upper Sequoia, and General Sherman tree, if you don't mind a bumpy road driving up to Buck Rock to the lookout tour has the best view in the park. All the places mentioned except the Buck Rock lookout have magnets and stuff like that for the wife

You'll hate Yosemite in the summer time. Between all the dirt bag climbers and butt load of tourist that place gets so freaking busy this time of year. Totally worth the fuel money and drive though.  It really is amazing.

Yeah hit up Sequoia and Kings Canyon. When you coming, maybe I could set up a day trip in San Bernadino NF and you could ride along.

I think I'm looking at Kings and Sequoia.  The wife and I would love to do Yosemite, but this time of year it would be brutal.  And we are on a budget this year.  As we can't really afford this trip, but I finally got them to honor their families wishes.

Rocksurfer, I would love to get a ridealong with you.  But not this trip.  I don't have any coinage for Marlin parts.  I might be able to scrounge up enough for one of these!
