Real Quick, need to Identify Tranny
« on: Mar 21, 2005, 06:24:22 AM »
Ordered an R-151 two weeks ago, from a salvage yard in Denver got it this morning, as soon as I got it I looked to make sure that it was an R-151 but it doesn't have a drain on the bottom of the bell housing, and the t-case is a top shift, so I marked the input and out put shafts, and when I turned the input 4 times the out put turned 1 time, so that is roughly 4 to 1 first gear, and that sounds about right.  And on the tranny it has 86 turbo written on it???

PLEASE NEED HELP!!!

Don't have a camera, I'm at work Right now.  Trans is here too.
Rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

It's a good idea, but it may not be quite accurate enough at just 1 turn.

R151F (Turbo 4cyl) have a 4.31:1 First Gear
R150F (V6) have a 3.83:1 First Gear
G/W-series have a 3.95:1 First Gear
L-series have a 3.93:1 First Gear

So you are comparing a 4.31:1 to about a 4:1. In this case I would mark the shafts again and turn it maybe 3 times. Then you would compare about a 13:1 if its a Turbo or it would be about 11 3/4 if its not.

And if its a top shifter t/case then oh-boy :nerv:

I'm positive that it is a W-56, it has that little sensor on the side of it and the Bell housing is not any where near the same as an R series trans, plus like I said it has a top shift t-case, but it does have these cool red leather shift knobs that I will be taking as a fee for all the trouble this has been.

What I think happened is that they realized how cheap that they were giving a R-151 and t-case away for.  When I called them a week ago they said that the "original" tranny they had was no good so they were going to find a different one. and give me that one.  They probly thought I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.  Boy were they wrong.

Going to go up to Denver this weekend and take the W-56 back and make sure that I get the R-151.

That sucks bro.  I hope they have one they can get for you.  You'll need that forward shift case as well for that R151 so take that back too.
