TC rear output shaft
« on: May 06, 2002, 12:44:38 PM »
Yesterday, the pinion nut on the rear output shaft of
my 6-year old TC (4.7 marlin gears in single case, assembled/re-built by Marlin) loosened and fell off on highway 50.
Needless to say, it was the beginning of a real bad day.
Looks like I'll have to replace the driveshaft and the rear companion flange , at the least.
My questions is about the threads on the output shaft.
They got slightly boogered near the end of the shaft, when the splined flange came out.  I can still thread the pinion nut on (didn't lose that !) , but it takes a little effort (can't thread it on with just fingers).  Is this OK, or should I replace the output shaft ?

Do the threads allow you to torque the nut down to factory specs, or does it yield?

Where are the threads damaged? At the end or at the nut's final resting place when tightened?

I think it would be a decision of how bad it looks.
Also, the fear of it being bent or partially cracked or something may lead to its replacement.

If it is just 1 or 2 rows on the outtermost threads, then I would say to not replace it and use it as normal. But if any damaged thread is taking the torque once it is tightened down, then I would say to replace it.

I would definately look into it being bent or damaged in another way also...

BigMike

Thanx for the response , BigMike.    :D
Looks like it'll be OK.  Haven't been able to torque it down yet, though.  Not until I get a replacement companion flange.

Well, the threads are NOT ok.  Tried to torque the nut,
and couldn't even get past 2 revolutions.  Threads are too boogered up, and I ruined the nut, trying.
Any one in the Sac area have a TC output shaft ?

Are those output shafts the same for EFI and carb'ed
cases ?

Hey, sorry it didn't work out for ya.

All mainshafts are identicle in use from 1979-1995, but we believe that a 1988+ mainshaft is made out of stronger materials, but we are not sure, just a hunch.

Let us know if you need one'

Yep, I need one.  Should I call the shop tomorrow ?
My buddy needs one , too, for the same reason,
boogered-up threads.

Call them up, we've got a ton of them.

It's best to give them a call between 8am and 9am. They are less busy and less tied into the day  ;)

Regards,
BigMike

ps. Tell them that BigMike sent ya from the New Online Forum!!
