Topic: G54 Pops out of 1st

so i make it through the rubicon free and clear with no breaks then as soon as i get home my truck starts falling out of first gear every so often at first but its gotten to the point now that it wont even stay with me holding it there.  at first i thought it was a shifter seat issue but i replaced the seat and the cap but it still does it so now im thinking maybe its the berring that holds it in gear?  i looked into a rebuild kit but i dont have a way to press the gears so i think ill have to buy a new tranny unless someone can give me another suggestion? if i do go that route though my buddy has a tranny out of an 82 that should be a G52 i believe but would that be compatable with my 86's G54?........ long story short HELP lol

I had the same problem in my 1st 85 pickup...I believe it was a G-54. After tearing down the tranny I found the shift forks were worn paper thin...I found a tranny for parts with bad input shaft n used the forks from it...fixed my problem.  The g-52 should be almost the same tranny except has aluminum intermediate plate instead of steel

damn so a rebuild kit from marlin probably wouldnt even fix it looks like ill be buying my buddys hopefully he sells it to me cheap lol

yah only thing i can do i guess lol crackep open a few tcases but thisl be my first tranny lol should be interesting

A new transmission might be in your future. But if you dont have the coin for that, you might be able to get a donor G-54.  Make sure you have a G-54 so you get a G-54 Donor to get parts out of, should you choose to go that way. There are some differences between the 52 and 54, the forks, input bearing and the cut of the gears (Ratios are the same). Center section of the transmission is going to be the same whether it is a 52 or 54. Like 4runner said, it could be the forks thats causing it not to stay in gear. In a 54, the forks are aluminum alloy, so make sure you get the correct fork to swap out. Hopefully some of this information will help you.

This is perhaps the best improvement Toyota made when they upgraded the G52 to the G54. The forks in the G52 are cast iron and suffer the same reduced lifespan as the cast iron forks found in L-series transmissions.

so the G52 wont just bolt up and go then? like i said earlier ive never messed with a transmission before so im probably asking newb questions but as long as its the same externally im not sure why it wouldnt work unless they have a different spline count or something? or would the different cut on the gears prevent me from doing so?

as far as i know the g52 should be a direct fit...both have forward shift transfer cases n I believe they are the same length...just some of the internals are different

the G52 will bolt up now problem! Its going to look like the same transmission externally.

awesome! good thing me and my buddy bought that extra first gen with a blown rod ;p parts trucks for the win time to get a new one though shes gettin pretty picked clean after this lol
