Trans pops out of 1st
« on: Jan 08, 2007, 09:45:46 AM »
When  I'm driving slow, just over idle, the trans will pop out of 1st with no warning or sound :yikes:. I've replaced the seat and socket but it didn't help at all :smack:. It's an 88 4Runner 3.0 with the 150 trans. Any ideas??  :dunno::help: :dunno:

Your center plate is worn out and also a couple of your bearings are worn out. These two combine to allow the mainshaft to "walk" or move forward or rearward depending on the direction of the load, and since the mainshaft is moving but the shift fork is not, the movement drags the mainshaft under the shift collar/hub thus disengaging the gear.

After you notice this in 1st, as it gets worse, I believe it will also begin to pop out of 3rd gear also.

The only way to fix this is the replace the worn out parts.

have you lifted the runner recently?  Us this a new problem?

My truck was falling out of gear for a few years, I just got used to holding it in.  I also did the seat and bushing replacement, didn't help.  Then when I cut my floorboards for my duals, I discovered that my shift boots (they're actually one peice)  was pulling the shifter back to neutral because of my body lift.

just a thought there
