Need help identifying trans
« on: Sep 29, 2013, 11:19:08 AM »
Hey everyone.  I am as new as it gets to anything Toyota and anything vehicles really.  We've had this 81 standard cab sitting in pieces for a while now and I have decided to take it on even though my knowledge of these trucks is as basic as it can be.  I am willing to learn I just do not know where to start.  I was told the engine is in good running condition so I figured I would start with the trans/clutch.  Ive done some searching around and have come down to an agreement that it is either an l45 or an l50.  I took a few pictures that could help I was hoping someone could tell me how to distinguish the two without actually putting it all back together.  If I need to take better pictures or if I need to show the transfer case as well, please tell me. otherwise I would appreciate anyone's help either way especially some pointers to set me in the right direction because I know I sound quite dumb.

where's the rest of the transmission??

the best way to tell a L45 from a L50  is the 45 is a 4 speed and the L50 is a 5 speed. everything else is the same

Its is in two pieces. I figured a pic of the gears may help identify it.  The guy i bought it off of cant remember if it was a 4 or 5 speed i was hoping to identify it without putting it back together.  but this is only because it needs new gaskets.  Would replacing the gaskets matter based on how many speeds it has?
I am as newb as it comes so please dont take my questions too personally ha

I'm going to say it's a 5 speed.

That gear and shift fork sticking out look like 5th.

Put the gear shift lever on and see if you can go through all the gears..........

Any ideas on where to get gaskets only?  I seem to only be finding rebuild kits which come with bearings and other uneeded parts?
