Some Quick Stupid Questions
« on: Sep 16, 2013, 06:55:05 PM »
Peicing back together a truck that's been rolled...25 years ago.

How do the side marker lights bolt in? Is it the same light adjusters for the headlights as it looks like I need some longbolts with a plastic clip base.

Also, where can I get the little plastic studs that's are suppose to help hold the windshield cowling in?

What year?  Which plastic clips?  There are a few different ones.

Sorry guys it's for a 88 cab of a pickup. The wi shield cowel has two wood screws that screw into plastic bases similar to the headlight adjusters except they are actual screws not bolts. The outside holes had plastic studs with flush tops that held the the cowel in place but could not be saved during the removal.

The side markers look like they need the same headlight adjusters as the headlights do (the ones marlin just started selling) but I am not sure.

I had to buy a new cab for my truck as it was rolled in 85 and been sitting ever since. The 88 cab I bought for it only came with a windshield and interior. Everything else was stripped from it.

For the plastic rivet's on the sides of your cowl.  You can get them at most Autoglass shops.  Anywhere that sells autobody supplies should also have something that will work.

Cool Ill try and give that a look.

What about the side markers? I never had the hardware to take off in the first place to even know what existed.

Anyone? Just run outside quick and take a look at your rig! How do the side markers attach?

Lowes has a good selection of odd ball parts and screws in the hardware section.  You can measure the square hole the plastic pieces go into in the fender and go to the store and look for that size.  The plastic part goes into the fender to give the screw something to grab.  I was at one point just going to weld little nuts back there and use machine screws because the plastic one kept falling out.

IS there a website that lists OEM Toyota parts by diagram? When I had my Nissan it was great because it would give you an exploded diagram with part numbers for everything with a line drawn to it. And when you clicked on that number it gave you the link to order it from the website.

Id rather save the frustration of trying to figure something out at Home Depot (Lowes is more than an hour drive) and have to go back if it dosent work.

Also adding to the mess. What else holds the headlights in? I got new headlight adjusters (two for each) and got them in but it seems like its barely staying in. Something about headlight springs? Is that the only thing Im missing?

Toyomotorparts.com has diagrams. You first have to pick from a category like fender for example. Then click on the More Info box and another screen pops up. You can then click on a parts diagram.

I've been praised before, but never that highly. WOW!

I just followed the info that 2manytoys posted, except I used Front Clearance Light instead of Fender.

This is a great website.  I thought I would give it a try for a few odds and ends I need and they have a bunch of stuff.  You just have to know the part numbers or know exactly what you are getting.

Stopped at a toyota dealership this morning after dropping off my Subaru BRZ for service. They didnt even nylon nuts listed in there list anymore but had the screws listed but none in stock and they said its not something that has been in the shop in a longggg time. However I found an assorted box of nylon nuts in Advance Auto Parts so Im hoping those work once I find out what size works best as they are standard sizes not metric. And the screws can just be a random wood screw that fits/works so Im not too worried about that. Ill report back again soon! Thanks for all your help MC posters!

If you can't find the inserts the right size for the marker lights, you can rivet a piece of sheet metal over the hole, and use a self tapping outdoor wood/sheet metal screws to hold the marker lights on.
Door sill, but the fix works the same for marker lights as well as grills that have had the plastic clips broken, but unlike the trim and the grill, no plastic has to be removed from the marker lights for them to fit correctly.

Thanks for the pics! Is there a special anchoring point that the spring goes to the body or is it just a whole in the body? Kinda hard to tell from the pic.

There is about a 1/2" stamped hole in the radiator support that the spring attaches to.

If you have a NAPA store near you, the one (owned by Riebe's) I was in today had a new large selection of oem style clips, inserts, etc., you might find the fender inserts there if you can't find something at the hardware store.

Yeah I havent found a box of assorted plastic nuts and rivets so Im going to try the rivets on the windshield cowling and and nylon nuts on the fender. Hopefully it works out.

Just havent had the motivation to do anything. My brand new Subaru BRZ is at the dealership for some small common issues they are having and they tried to tell me "no issues/cant reproduce" so I went back down with the TSB's and showed that there were countermeasures in production after my VIN.  /rant

Those "can't reproduce" issues are always fun to diagnose.  I spent about $300 on 3 trips to the dealer over 6 months for one of those before it ever triggered a code.  Is there a BRZ/FRS forum yet?
