The 85 4runner (22re) I picked up has high oil consumption. I have not yet calculated and I am aware consumption is normal for the most part.

I believe I have two sources for the consumption.  Bothe are probably related to whomever replaced the timing chain (along with head gasket) last.

I have what sounds like the 'typical' oil puking out of a leak on the timing cover.  (It looks like it leaks out and cooks into very dense globs.

I also am burning oil.  It is not significant (like I just rolled out of MadMax with a cloud following me).  But when starting up and idling to temp occasionally you see the white smoke (not condensation).  Inside the pipe is coated with dry exhaust 'powder'.  It is not spitting oil out of the pipe.

Also, when under load, it is exaggerated and very noticeable.  I'm sure whoever is tailgating gets ticked about it.

So....until I pull everything apart (which wont be for a while) and figure out if it is the timing cover, head gasket, PCV or EGR, Valve Guides, etc....should I jump to a heavier wieght oil.

I have been using 5w30.  i have been seeing a lot of people recommend 10w40 to fatten the seals a little more.

BTW, I live in Lower Alabama so thats what the climate is like when considering oil weight.  Just moved to the south from Colorado, first down down here.  (And my AC has been out in the truck too, lol)

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Run a high mileage oil 20w/50 if you can find it. Basically find the highest motor oil you can get. Also get a can of seal conditioner to try and seal it up temporarily, this is not a permanent fix. You can also get a diesel engine oil like Delo and it may help a little, it doesn't hurt to put diesel motor oil in a gas motor unlike using gas motor oil in a diesel. Though from the way you have described what is happening  none of these suggestions may help, sounds like it's time to fix the problem.
