I am currently running a 100,000 mile 22re with a cam header exhaust intake. I just upgraded my trans and cases to a turbo r151, chromo output, and 23 spline cases. Im debating on having my 22re completely rebuilt with a bad ass cylinder head from Putney perfomance machine in Chico. He is a buddy of mine and specializes in Toyota motors. Or should I do a swap? 3rz? 5.3 chevy? 4.3 chevy v6? What can this tranny and t-case combo handle? I dont bang my truck but I dont take all the sissy bypasses when I wheel. I try to take hard obstacles with finesse.

Honestly, Id just do a 3rz or 3.4 swap. Its easy, and still toyota.

But on the the other hand, Jim Putney does know whats up. He does great work. But both you and I know, those 22res don't like hills too much when driving to the trail

Or maybe thats just mine

IMO I'd go to the 3.4. Last I heard Marlin personally had 2 3.4 setups ready to install, first come first served.

We all know that 22RE's weren't fast in a 4x4 in any means.  Just reliable.  It all depends on your level of motor swaps.  Both the 3RZ and the 3.4 would entail a very detailed wiring crossover.  But if I weren't afraid of the wiring, I'd go with the 3RZ.  Excellent motor for the power it puts out, and gets better gas mileage on the hwy vs. the 3.4.  I followed Bigmike up the 4 lane to Shaver one day, and it was all I could do in my wife's minivan to keep up with him.  And we were doing 70mph.  And he said he was holding back for me.   :yesnod:  And you would have room for stuff under the hood.

But if your happy with the 22RE and just want that little extra umph, I'd go with the 22RE, but your gonna run into injection issues.  May have to look into Mega Squirt or try upgraded injectors.  I've heard of guys using Engnblders high flow heads, cams, headers, and with 22RTE injectors and not having issues.   And being able to get the power needed.

the 4.3 would work but the 500 dollar bellhousing is a bit much but should handle tons on 47s pending on which gears you choose

keep it simple. stick with the 22re and go out and enjoy wheeling rather than having a rig down for months trying to do an engine swap. enjoy the 22re for what it is..its just the nature of the beast  8)

Did the 4.3 swap with 700r4.

Love the auto for the rocks.... I don't have a tow rig.... So I have to drive to and from.

Wish I had just rebuilt the 22re and kept the 5spd.

I'm agreeing with the keep The 22re crowd... With gearing you will get there and do just fine!

I personally believe the 22re is not a good motor. Some folks brag about it.. I never did liked it.. So I upgrade to a SC400 1uz. Made all $ back from parts to break even and to buy extra parts. Still got more parts to sell.. Check out my build..

its a tight swap but doable and well worth it!! and plus if this motor blows i can get a JDM 30k mi from japan for $400 or a complete car under 1k all day everyday.. i sold my perfectly running 22re and tranny for 1350. and if i was to get a rebuilt one it cost me $900 plus core with possible future blown head gastket issues and idle issues. 1uz with minor tune up last up to 300-500k miles and still running like a champ.. do the math guys....

If you need a Chevy motor and drivetrain components maybe you should just buy a Chevy pickup and wheel it. Just saying, no swapping then. Just saying. Chevy's are cheap.  :gap:
Anything Toyota other than the 22re will be an improvement to no end, I think it usually comes down to what you find a deal on.   :smokin:

not sure where ur from, but i'v found a few, actually many sc400 from 100-200k running smoged vehicle with body damages for $500-1000 in san fran, cali.. almost picked up one for the hella of it.. i dont think any swap can get cheaper than that!

Buddy of mine, who used to be a member on here, is running a 22RE boosted on propane.  And he's making more power than is needed for his crawler running 40's.

I'm tired of people saying that the 22R motor isn't that great of a motor.  They are solid, reliable, and dependable.   Yeah, they are not a powerhouse of a motor.   But reliability, they are.  Yeah, more horsepower would be awesome, but I've done things with my 22RE, that still impress's me to this day.  And millions of them, still on the road today, don't mean squat?

I'd stick to a 22RE built up.  And if it doesn't run like you want, the sell it.  Guarantee somebody will buy a 'built' motor.

Very well put! the R series engines are just like little tractor engines. They will run FOREVER if you dont over rev the piss out of them all the time and run good clean oil and filters. Sure they are no powerhouse but thats where gearing comes into play. Im seriously debating running low boost on my 22re I built for the runner, throw a set of 7mgte injectors in and a piggy back FIC, nice little FMIC and watermeth.... wouldnt cost me that much plus the thing would have such a sweet powerband and run a very long time. Little off topic but has anyone ever tore down an engine runnin watermeth? Pistons, rings and valves all look SHINY NEW Plus you can run more timing safely on 92 octane rather than spending a bunch on race gas..... and honestly, who doesnt love the sound of a turbo spooling up?

So with that being said, if you've been running 22re and havent had many issues, stick to that and build it.  :twocents:
I personally dont care for V motors, always be a die hard inline lover. I'd take an inline 6 over a V6 ANY DAY!
