Speedo adjustment
« on: Jan 13, 2013, 05:19:08 PM »
I have a 1987 Toyota Pickup with a 5 inch lift, 35 inch tires, 5.29 gears and dual cases. How do I get my speedo to read the correct MPH? Thank you.

Change the speedo gear in the transfer case.

Stock gear was 18 teeth.
stock diff 4.1
stock tire 225/75 15 = 28.3"

New gear would be

(old speedo gear) * (new diff gear) / (old diff gear) * (old tire diameter) / (new tire diameter) = (new speedo gear)

18 * 5.29 / 4.1 * 28.3 / 35  =

So if I'm reading this right, I just swap out the speedo gear in the transfer case to 19 tooth. Right?

I would think it would read pretty close to acurate. Mine was within a few mph w/ 4.88's and 35's.

Yeah that's all you do. Now you have to find one to use. 2wd and 4wd speedo gears are interchangeable.
