22r retiring. Engine swap in my future
« on: Dec 10, 2012, 10:30:00 PM »
I have recently decided to put my 22r to rest. I have been looking into a few engine swaps and would like to keep my truck 4cyl. I have been looking into buying a donor vehicle for either a 3rz or a 22re. I live in California and somewhat concerned about passing smog with new engine and seeing if the swap is even legal in the first place. My dad says I should look into a 2lte but I feel like that is a realm that I dont have enough info in and not sure it would be legal with these new diesel smog laws in place.
Pic of rig cuz I know everyone loves pics

Thanks for looking all suggestions are welcome
Chris Sanchez

I agree.  Very easy swap, lots of Cali smog info for ya.  You are on the right forum to gather all the info you need.

Chilkat mounts, and it bolts in.  Literally.  Wiring was cake.  Researched this forum, got an FSM EWD, deciphered and removed wiring I didn't need(air bags, misc. body wiring), added external Walbro fuel pump under the truck (originally carb'd) on the frame rail, gave the 3RZ ECU what it wanted for ignition switch and speed sensor, wired up starter and fired right up.  I've put on about 40K miles since April.  Runs great.

I got a buddy who put a 1uz-fe in his 84. Pretty quick and easy swap. Plus he's pushing a reliable 250bhp

What about all of the rest of the vehicle electronics, A/C, lights ect?

I left it alone.  Left my stock fuse box in place.  I believe there is only one wire from the battery for the stock fuse box.
