Im thinking about going the cheaper route and putting a spool in my front diff. Are there any downfalls to doing this. I figured if i need to unlock i can unlock a hub?

after the issues im having wth a lockright id go spool fml :snare:

Broken birfields could be in your future, so get some Longs with your spool. It may be cheaper initially but in the getting an air/electric locker will pay off in the long run. Personally I put an Auburn (limited slip) in my fronts and a Detroit in the rear. I have also run them front and rear with little trouble. They have a great product that lasts, cone style that never wears out.

Just weld it instead of wasting you money on a spool so when you decide you hate a front end that's always locked you can go buy a real locker and not lose the money a spool would have cost you.

Thats why I asked. Im a big fan of doing it right the first time.

i wouldent run welded becouse if they break apart you risk your ring&pinion

If any locker breaks, you run the risk of busting a r/p

But welding a heat treated material makes it a lot weaker. Run a spool for strength issues

If you weld it right nothing's going to break apart.

If you plan on a full lock up front then weld the diff and invest in longs for insurance thats all I have to say.

do you like to be able to turn?   then dont solidly lock the front end like a spool or welded...  i run a lockrite in the front and have never had problems... for me it slips enough to turn well and has a nice solid lockup..

i hear the aussie is even better...

I hate lockrights..aussies are good up front...air locker waste of money imo. E locker nice if you wanna mod your axle..e-locker is one of the strongest lockers you can put in a toyota axle. I wouldnt run a spool up front unless you got full hydro and you trailer your rig..you wont be able to drive it on street with a spool.

So no spool upfront.. I'm hearing some negative things about the lock rites, and sounds like the Aussie is the winner of this thread... My rig will be trailered everywhere. I don't plan on putting new longs in until I break something. It's a 85 toy axle on a 86 4runner with 5.29s and 38s. Which I figure will b putting a strain on the front drivetrain which I don't want to add to but I do need to lock up the front.

Im running an 85 with stock internals, 5.29s, and that lockrite, on 40,s and i havent broke anything (knock on wood)... just the way you wheel
