Check out the new 'Buy Me A Drink' feature!

Hey guys,

I've wanted to do this for a loooong time and finally got it done over the weekend. Now you can encourage other members to send you a quick donation for your well detailed build thread or great advice by using the Buy Me A Drink system! The system uses PayPal and therefore you'll need a PayPal email address in order to receive any money.

To use it, navigate to your Forum Profile and scroll all the way down to the bottom. You can choose what you'd like someone to buy you: Drink (wine glass icon), Beer, Coffee, Soda, or Cigar. Then enter your PayPal email address and finally specify if you'd like anonymous guests to also be able to send you money (please note this will expose your PayPal email address). Then hit the 'Change profile' button at bottom right and you're done!

You can see I have a cup of coffee beneath my profile picture at left. If you click it you'll have the option of using your PayPal to donate money or for those who don't have a PP account the system accepts credit cards. It's all done off our site and through PayPal's site (of course we do not capture any money! - the system is for you guys and your hard work!).

We could also use a less obtrusive icon inline with the other little icons but I figured it wouldn't get noticed...

Maybe there is no "donation" option? I know there is a send money for "Goods" which does charge a percentage in Paypal but you're right, I'd expect a donation to be exempt from this.

you used to be able to "gift" money which would not take out a percentage i believe.

I'll take a look at the code when I'm back in front of my laptop. There are no options to configure what type of PayPal transaction... Hacking the code is no trouble for me & best case scenario it's just programmed for the wrong PayPal setting.

Just read this, thanks for posting it. So we're screwed, PP will always get a sip of your drink!

My PP is linked to my bank. Not sure if it matters but have you guys linked your PP to your bank account? One more unknown to cross off the list...

It still remains to be seen if the code is sending as a "Gift" as I can't check the code from my phone. I'll find out more on it tomorrow evening

Ok I see it meow:

Just make sure PayPal gets their cut most of the time. Don't try to circumvent their system when you know the fees are what keeps them in business. I'm certain PayPal has averaged 2% on my transactions and I figure that's around $1500 in the last 3 years."

Ok just did it

I also added a note field so you can enter some silly message.

It is coming across as a donation: The title of the PayPal page reads "Michael, please review your donation" and the button reads "Donate $2.00 USD Now"

Nope,  Paypal is still take 3% + the $0.30 flat fee.

I refunded the first donation to see if PayPal is trying to take money on refunds...............


AND

It looks like the greedy bastards send you the $2.00 back, but kept the $0.30 which they pulled out of my balance  (i.e. the second donation).
