new guy post
« on: Oct 06, 2012, 07:17:41 PM »
Hay ya'll New guy post here, i have a 89 ext cab 3.0 n auto tranny, both trashed! but the price was right. So im looking for info on what to do with it. rebuild both, swap both or convert to 22re w 5 speed.
I know there are diff opinions out there on this subject but here is my situation.
Picked up the truck for $100, - the rearend which I had at the house. After a lil cleaning and tuning I got her to start (it sat for over 2 yr without running) Motor knocked bad in bottom end I suspect bearing are shot. Talked to a guy the knows the truck he tells me rev been out of trk for 4 yr. (wish I had talked to him sooner) Anyway, I can get an 87 4runner (complete ride) w 22re and 5spd man for $500. 22re had cracked head.
So what to do?? rebuild the 3.0 and auto, R&R eng n tranny w the 22re n 5spd or find a used 3.0 and auto tranny? BTW i've been looking, they are pretty rare here in louisiana.
Open to suggestion!

Thanks, from what I've been reading the 3.4 swap is pretty straight fwd with only issue being elec connection and even that doesn't seem too bad. I think im going with a remove/rebuild on my current 3.0 and replace the auto tranny. No one in my area seems to rebuild toyota tranny's.
I had a guy offer to sell me a 4.5 from a land cruiser for $300, any idea the nightmare I would find myself in with a swap like that? I don't think there is room between firewall and radiator for one.
