They were a replacement motor sent over from Japan. Low power, hard to find parts for, different block than the 20 or 22r. Overall crappy motor.

X2!  People too often think they have something real special, when in reality they have a hunk of garbage.  Cheap and plentiful japanese replacement engines that were around 30% less powerful.  Ditch it asap  ;)

Its a 2.0 22r engine. Less powerful but otherwise the same all around. Good if you can get it cheap, like 100 bucks. Rumor has it they get quite a bit better mpg. Thats what the celica forums say
2008 TRD 4x4 Double Cab Tacoma
1994 12 valve 5 speed 4x4 single cab dodge 2500
1986 22re 5speed 3link 4runner (the beater)
1982 3rz swapped pickup (in progress)

I had one in an 83 lb 4by.  Ran very well and was low mile but had less power than any 20r I've driven, got the same 15 mpg I've pulled in every single 4wd toyota I've had.

as far as I know the crank in these is the same as the 20 and 22R considering they all have the 89mm stroke.  someday I'll find one and confirm but I'd bet the flywheel, and connecting rods would also be the same since Toyota didnt like changing things they didnt have to.

Main difference I've found is the lack of displacement and restrictive head.  I would take that power rating with a grain of salt, too.

I agree,  I doubt it would come close to 90.
