i gotta mean gangsta lean...
« on: Aug 02, 2012, 08:08:30 AM »
hey guys i need some help/opinions

i did ruf /63" on my 85 toy pickup extra cab
the rear is fine and level, my front is a whole different story
im on my second set of ruf packs for the front, both the 1st and 2nd packs have a major lean on the driver side
like 1-1 1/4" lean
checked my frame for cuts and welds, doesnt seem to have been cut before
i believe its been wrecked on that side before but looks like its pretty squared to the other side i dont know what to do

both packs/sets  (2 different sets of spring packs) have been built identical to the other with a 3/8 pad to compensate for the driver side and it still leans

1st pack was rear toyota 48" plus 3 leaves from the rear lift pack that came with the truck= lean
2nd pack totally different set of toy 48" plus 3 leaves from another different set of toy 48" = lean

i dont know what it is, does ruf/63" lean like this?
i dont personally know anyone that is running ruf/63"
im planning on getting 5" springs this tax season so this is gonna have to do for now

lean/look dont bother me but the lean does affect driving when making right turns it wants to over steer
i mean up in the winding mountains roads, hunting season here starts in 2 weeks so gotta get it rite if i could

Do you have the spacer on top of the spring perch on that side? I had a pretty bad lean on my truck. I did a 3rz swap and what really helped was moving the battery to the passenger side. Make sure you have that spacer in there or it may just be your spring packs.  :dunno:

spacer is on the bottom of the pack
i could see the possibility of it being the actual spring pack itself but that whats the odds of 2 different ruf springs packs made seperatly from different 4 stock packs both have the same lean?

Huh. Not sure then. My issue was weight distribution for the most part. Could you add another leaf till you get different springs? hope you get it figured out.

Have you tried swapping the leaf packs from side to side, to see if the lean follows the leaf pack?

Usually passenger side leans especially with a full tank..weird it's leaning on driver side..
Sounds like you built the pack of springs and used a bunch of driver side on driver side pack..and put a bunch of passenger side leafs on passenger...therefore causing the driver to lean and the passenger side to sit higher.

Build a pack for driver side using mixed leafs using PASSENGER leaves..since they normally have a slightly bigger arch to compensate for fuel weight.

If you swap them and they do it just open up the packs and mix and match leafs

Or just remove the 3/8" spacer on the high side and see what happens

but are the rears driver/passenger designated?

i thought rear springs were equal and go on either side

i've seen on forums that people needed to put the 3/8 pad on to the drive to level it out

sorry for no pics but, pass side definitely has more arch than the drive side sitting on the truck

the drive side looks alot flatter sitting there

ill have to work on it after i get back this weekend from camping

Just a thought
i'm using a cut down overload that measures about 3/8 as my pad, cut down to the size/demensions of the perch
but when you buy springs the provided pad is welded on the perch and spring pack sit on top of the pad
my 3/8 pad is centered and added on to the spring pack using the center pin bolt (pad on the bottom of course)
could that be a problem, i dont see the difference between doing that and the spring just sitting on top of a welded on the perch 3/8 pad

You could have just had bad luck and built each set of springs from worn out springs, buying junkyard springs there is a 50/50 chance of getting bad springs.  Swapping them would tell you if it is the springs or the vehicle.

As for springs being designated, I know my '90's came w/an "L" and an "R" on them when I had them rebuilt, not sure what they had on them when I pulled them out.

Did you check the distance between the spring and frame or just the ride height. Spring to frame should tell you if it's the springs.

i said the h3ll with it
i bought sum 4" springs and gonna put those on as soon as i can find someone to weld on my spring pad for me
if its still leaning and has a bent frame i got a straight 88 4runner as back up
downside is its v6 auto
but there is always the option of 3.4 :)

I had the same problem...I did try swapping front springs (side to side as mentioned above) it didn't help. I started looking at my shackle angles. Both drivers side shackles kicked out little further than passenger side, I looked at rear passenger shackle and it held it's ground like fresh springs installed. I took off rear springs and stacked on top of each other and noticed drivers rear was sagging. I replaced both with new packs and no longer a gangsta. LOL Hope that helps.

thanks 87forunner
thats the next step
even with the new 4" springs it still leans but its tolerable now that i can make right turns without the oversteering

after the hunting season the rear-end is whats next to be done but until then all my money is goin to gas for hunting
@ $4 a gallon its pretty expensive around here

thanks again for your help guys
