So i bought my '85 4runner about a year ago, and have done quite a bit of work on it since then, but it's still a long ways from being in ok condition... but recently i found this '86 4runner on craigslist and i snatched it up for $600. It had a leaky main seal, and the guy was in a bind to sell it. but besides the leaky main seal it's in pretty good shape. I was wondering about the idea of SAS'ing the new 4runner with the axle from my old one... the main reason i want to do it is because i had to patch the frame of my '85 due to rust, and it still haunts me a bit... So my question goes out to all those who have ventured into SAS territory. How cost effective would it be to swap my axles and drive the '86? I hope to get about $500 from parting out my old 4runner, and i really don't have much of a budget. I also don't have access to a plasma cutter... just a grinder and a welder...

You will need a spring hanger, shackle tubes, crossover steering, lengthened drive shaft, shock hoops, and a set of springs (you won't want to use stock front springs).  The plasma cutter would be nice, but a SAS can be done with a grinder and lots of cut off wheels.  I'd plan on $800 to really do it, and that's still budget minded, and only counting parts, not electricity, gas, blades, etc.

i just finished mine. it was the first one i have done. and i made all my hangers. you already have the axle thats good. i spent about 2000 and got everything parts, material, discs (cutting, Grinding, wire wheels), electricity and gas for the torch, and some 35x13.5 toys on some steelies . i would try to rent or find a torch it will make things a lot easier. you will need a torch or plasma to blow hole threw the frame for frame tube.
you can try to do it with a hole saw but good luck the is a frame gusset inside the frame right where you hole goes. other than that be ready to spend some time on her. its easy you just need to stay with it.to save you some money you can use the rear springs from one of the trucks for you fronts for now that will save you on some leafs for know. oh and brake lines and other small things you will need to keep the progress moving forward. just stick with it. it will be done.  and always make sure to keep some funds to run to get something last minute. try to buy all your discs at a welding shop or air gas place, you will save like 1 to 1.50 or more on each disc.  and if you do end up using a torch make sure to have your gas full before the weekend.
