Differentials
« on: Apr 01, 2012, 07:25:14 AM »
I did a search to try and find out what the four differentials I have are, '82 and '83. the two fronts are different, and one of the rears has a block that I don't recognise! Can anyone help me identify them, I have an Aussie locker to put in the front axle. I need to know which or the differentials I have is the strongest!

Thanks, Matt

Thanks for your rapid reply, but, the diff on the front of the 83 isn't on the list! Maybe a European model, it looks upside down! Also any idea about the block on the rear? I can't take it apart yet.

I could use that on the back and the rear on the front? My Aussie locker is for a Hilux 79 to 85. Does this mean that it's an fj 80 axle or are the interchangeable?

Thanks, Matt

If u have what's called a 4 cyl Aussie, ( I'm asumming that is what u have.) u can only use that in a 4 cyl style diff. The difference is carrier bearing size. So u need to match up the Aussie to the correct diff style. And I do not recommend putting the high pinion in the rear, they have a tendency to break. and the high pinion is one that came out of a landcruiser axle, that is correct. And they are interchangeable.

Thanks Goldrush,

Yes it's a 4 cyl Aussie, so I can put it in what's now the rear differential, I will use it in the front, and swap in one from the '82 when I change over the two vehicles!

Thanks again things are now clear!
