Home/Self Built cages tube hom much what kind
« on: Nov 22, 2011, 11:26:50 AM »
So after looking for a while I cant seem to find where there is a compiled list of materials people used to build their cages. I dont care if exo/ partial/ or in cab I want to know how much you used and what kind. I am about to start 2 cages i is going to be a FULL exo on a first gen runner and the second (but will get done first) is a full in cab cage on a 2nd gen runner. I dont care if there is pics or not just looking for a spot we can all get an idea of what one needs to build a cage.

both of mine are going to be 1.75 .120 DOM I am hoping to get away with 200 or less in cab and 400 or less out of cab but a few people I have talked to said about 500 on the exo but that seems like a lot.

1.75 .120 runs 2lbs/ft, and the DOM I have priced locally runs $6-8/ft.  It will be unlikely to build the cages you want to out of DOM given the amounts you want to spend.

Unless someone here has done several identical cages, it is unlikely anyone has written down the exact amounts.  I know my buddies that have built cages just buy 4-5 20' sections to start with, then buy more if needed.  Not exactly the smartest way when buying material, but most have more money than patience, and figure they will find a use for any of the leftovers.

If you are trying to get an idea of how much tube is needed, you could tape out the design of the exo-cage on the Runner, and for the internal cage 1/8" round bar should work.  That should get you a ball park amount, then round up to the nearest 10' or 20' section for a buffer.

4/5 20' sticks should be good. you could use dom for you main structure and hrew for your x supports and crossbars. 1.75 .120  wall hrew for the whole cage would work also. Around here (modesto ca) 1.750 .120 wall dom is $6.75 per ft and hrew is $2.50. Make sure you tie your cage into the frame.

Heres 4x4 innovations dom cage test. They did not tie into the frame. Held up fine but i feel better tying mine into the frame.

I am getting my tube for $3.02 per foot. I though the cage was over kill but i am having trouble finding other cages that are in 2nd gen 4runner that runs the entire pass compartment. The only referance i have is some buddies that build full compition cages for sprints and lengends. So that is where my design comes from.

90 bucks a stick for 1 3/4 .120 dom and 40 bucks a stick for same but hrew in redding. Id buy 100 ft to start with. If its your first cage, your gonna burn a stick learning.
