Longfields -good bad or D44/D60 all the way
« on: Jul 05, 2002, 10:26:46 PM »
For me it's all about the Benjamins!!!!!  I got a Toy Live axle for free.  I want to do a SAS on my truck.  So do I....

A.  Buy new gears and locker to match rear and upgrade to SuperBirfeilds and hope nothing breaks

B.  Buy a D44 add gears and locker and u-bolts/shafts etc.

C. D60

Ok screw this what I really want to know is who's got Superbirs and how are they???  anyone break em... or an inner.  I realy don't want the hassle and would rather cut down a 44/60 to fit width or go full width but I got a free axle so what do I do???? :circle:

I'll be running a mildly moddified 22r and 39's - pretty light weight rig

Shiat - I should just sell the damn thing huh???? ??? ???

have you broken a CV?

44's aren't really much stronger than a toy but you get any width you want.

Really, it depends on what kind of wheeling you do, and what kind of rig you have.
But, a Toy axle with Longfields is a lot stronger than a D44 with stock uj's.  You can get CTM's and Warn shafts for it, and be smokin, but that's $$.
I'd say your best bet is the Toy axle.

wait a minute... its all about the Benjamins!?

you've already answered your ?.    ;)

Either one needs gears and lockers so that is not an issue, you're gonna pay one way or another....

and you already have the Toy axle... Use it!

I believe I heard of one busted longfield (on POR) but I know very little about that.  I am running one of the early ones since January with a Detroit and of course, not broken it but I'm pretty easy on them compared to others.  (Actually, I have a newfield on the long side and longfield on the short side to see which one go first.)

So.... stick with your Toyota axle, run the longfields and don't look back.   ;)

take care...

Longfields by far.  Guys out there running 40" tires, 200:1 gearing, and V8's have yet to brake em.  Guaranteed you'll brake an inner first every time.

the only BIRFIELD I broke twised the inner with it so  question the strength increase from a stocker..

Even with a longfield I would been screwed. Not worth the $$ in my opinion..

Whatever dude.  Like that would happen every time.  Did it twist from the recoil, or did it twist because the broken birf wouldn't turn in the housing and you still gave it gas and then twisted the inner?  Believe me, they ARE worth every penny, and more :moon:

The AP inners are gonna make the weak point the R&P.  Much less expensive (and easier to fix on the trail) to have the inner the weak point.  If I remember correctly, the stock inners are rated at 10,000 pounds, and R&P somewhere around 12,000.  So, you would probably break the R&P in most of the spots where the stock inners would let go anyways.

I'd put a toy axle with Longfields against a D44 with CTM's any day.

This is a funny thread

I've got Longfields with only 2 runs on them, the Con and Fordyce. So not much to go on yet. Seems to me that a stock D44 and a Toy birf are damn close in strenth. I see stock birfs and 44 U/j pop alot.

cromaly shafts and super birfs are stronger (n in my mind) than any d44 with warns/ctms.  i have seen alot of thing break including a ctm/ warn inner shaft, too bad i didn't see the ctm cap fly past my head, but i heard it.
